Fresh green veg in Queens?

Hello fellow chowhounds. My wife will be visiting family in Hollis Queens, NY. We are accustomed to eating fresh vegetables at lest daily. However, the family that my wife will be staying with are not keen on fresh vegetables. In the past my wife has tried to purchase fresh vegetables but the stores that her family purchase food stuff from have little fresh vegetables that are edible. Does anyone know of some place that sells fresh vegetables in the Hollis or Jamaica area in Queens? Unfortunately transportation is a problem, so my wife will only be able to shop in Hollis or Jamaica. My wife will be there for more than a week, so her health and colon would be grateful for any suggestions.

    aren't there lots of indian as well as caribbean grocery stores nearby, with fresh veg? not sure exactly where your wife will be in hollis, but i always remember plenty of places along hillside avenue, in the high hundreds. nothing specific but a bus-ride on the Q43 should show some places. And there is a large supermarket on hillside around . . . . hmmm, I can't remember but maybe 160s or 170s? I find it hard to believe there are absolutely no edible fresh vegetables in a mostly immigrant neighborhood where plenty of food is prepared constantly/daily.

      I’m not saying that there are no stores in Hollis with good fresh vegetables. Since I’ve never been to Hollis or NYC I have no clue what is available. My wife’s family do not eat much in the way of fresh veggies, unless if peas in chow main are considered a severing of vegetables. My wife is not the type of person to go searching in a strange town; she would just go with her sister to shop for meat and starch. So I was hoping that some people here would know of any places that sell fresh veggies. The farmer’s market sound promising, I hope there is some asparagus available there like here in Ontario.

        There should be some green carts around those neighborhoods. I haven't found any specific locations, but I believe Hollis and Jamaica fall into the areas where they're allowed.

          I don't think the Jamaica farmers market is there anymore. Unfortunately Hollis is sort of Long Island & sort of Queens. which means not great public transportation. I know if you travel over to Union Tpke. (heading towards St. Johns University) there are several well stocked korean green grocers that cater to the orthodox in the neighborhood.
          I think the neighborhood is fresh meadows/utopia.

            According to about.com, the Jamaica Ave farmer's market is not yet open. The one at the Hall of Science opens tomorrow, Sunday 6/14:
            * Location: 111th Street and 48th Avenue, off Corona Avenue, Corona, NY
            * Open: June 14 - November 15, 2009
            * Times: Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine

            You can also see if freshdirect.com will deliver to you. They rate their produce. Or StopandShop delivers. There is a Trader's Joe on Metropolitan Avenue, which is not too far away from Jamaica.
