Iron Horse Milwaukee

Please consider a trip to the Iron Horse hotel and its two dining options, Branded (in the bar) and Smyth, the full time restaurant. Chef Thomas has an adventurous spirit, just waiting to prove himself and show his talent. On Monday night, given free rein (i.e., no limits), he brought us a Wisconsin Usinger sausage and Carr Valley cheese sampling, two dozen oysters, a scallop with truffle essence and asparagus, prime steak with a bacon and bourbon cream reduction and strawberries and ice cream for dessert - and this was at the bar, not the restaurant, The vibe is strong, the service is excellent (ask for Meaghan), and the food is well above average. Tim Dixon has built the strongest new hot spot in all of Milwaukee.

Enjoy Iron Horse.

    1. We love Iron Horse. We have been to Branded several times. We usually eat at the bar. The food has always been outstanding. The bartenders are great, friendly and no how to mix a great drink.
We are looking forward to getting to Smyth.

      1. Went to the Smyth with the family a little while ago. Drinks were OK. Too sugary sweet. Tried multiple ones that they were all too much like candy.

Food was OK. Could have been better, could have been worse. Really enjoyed the foie gras of the day -- done with some sort of pancake with cooked apples, had a peanut butter and jelly vibe to it. Seared and seasoned well. The beef tartare was really good too but the quail egg was out of place. Can't go wrong with raw beef, salt, pepper, red onion, and pumpernickel, though.

The main is where it started to fall apart. The server sold us on the venison osso buco. And while it was not gamey at all, and presented beautifully with the bone (marrow! yum!) and risotto, it didn't have much flavor at all. And cried out for seasoning. Bland, bland, bland. Don't order this unless you really like bland, fork-tender food.

Ugh. Luckily, my husband's fried chicken was MUCH better. Crispy skin, served piping hot, with creamy mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, my sister in law's scallops with wilted vegetables suffered from cold vegetables (strangely her plate was warm and the scallops were fine).

Ordered a tiny bit of sorbet for dessert. The flavors were interesting, but there was far too much sugar in the sorbets. Eh.

I might go back for brunch, after they get their act together.
