I went in January and in March. In January, they could not sit me in the dining room because there was no table available on a Friday night so I had dinner at the bar. There are also 2 or 3 small tables besides the bar. I went back in March, because the food, the wine and the service were excellent and it was the same thing again...no place in the dining room but places available at the bar. The people that tend to eat at the bar usually go there before or after the theater or the opera so they don't have the tasting menu at 6 o'clock. They stay less longer and the places open up quicker.
The service is excellent at the bar.....the bartender-waiter Eric welcomed me back like I had been there the week before. He even remembered the night of the week I was there! They pay attention to details. I find the prices very expensive but when I went back, I had their menu d'economie. You still have a bill between 75$ to 100$ depending if you have wine or not. They also have tastes, which is a bit smaller than a full glass. When you eat alone, it allows you to have a couple of different wines without leaving tipsy! I will probably go back in a couple of weeks when I will be back in New York.

Picholine is busiest pre-theater because they get a lot of business from those attending performances at Lincoln Center. I've never done a walk-in, but I would presume if you do so and they have a table in the dining room available, they would seat you there if that is your preference. (Note: Picholine is closed on Sunday and Monday.)
