Where to buy a tortilla press?
Looking to start making my own corn tortillas and would like to get a tortilla press. Any recommendations on where I might find one in Toronto?
I'll also be needing to buy masa harina. I haven't started looking in my local grocery stores yet, so don't know how hard it may be to find. So if anyone knows what stores always carry it, I'd appreciate the tips. I'm happy to use just the dried meal to start, don't necessarily need the fresh masa (which it seems that many No Frills carry).
I make my own tortillas and found they turn out better using a simple rolling pin on a SILPAT. I have a tortilla press and tried it but found it didn't make my tortillas thin enough. I would suggest you try rolling it first and seeing if that works for you first.
Home made tortillas are so easy and so tasty compared to the store stuff.
PS The tortillas do not stick to the pin or the SILPAT because of the lard/shortening/butter/margarine in the dough. I can roll it out as fast as it takes to cook.
Little India has tortilla presses. There are a few kitchen supply stores there. they use them for chapatis, I believe. Anyhow, I bought one there and it works just fine. It was less than $20. They have one with a Mexican lady on the box, I think it plugs in and actually cooks the tortilla. I bought one that just presses and use cast iron pan.
Food basics has the Maseca brand of masa. Also highland farms has it plus several other varieties. Could depend on location, though. The food basics I'm talking about is at Gerrard Square and the Highland farms is at Kennedy & Ellesmere.
Tap Phong on Spadina has tortilla presses, as do a few of the Latin American stores in Kensington Market. These stores are also where you will find your masa harina, the Maseca brand is the most popular masa. Good luck and btw your tortilla press can be
used to make great chapatis too!
