How is the diameter of a fry pan measured?

I recently decided to start upgrading my cookware from my old analon set (that is falling apart). After reading many posts and reviews I bought an 11” fry pan from Falk. When I received the pan while it definitely felt like a quality pan, it looked a little small (compared to what I had) so I measured cooking area (bottom of the pan) and was a little disappointed to find that it was only 9 ½ inches. I contacted the sales people and was told pans are not measured by the bottom by rather rim to rim. I just wanted to check is that the normal?

    1. Yes, it's normal to measure pots and pans across the rim, not the bottom. If you want to order a cover for a pan, the cover size will be the same as the rim size.

      1. Sizes are also not always exact, Staub for instance are slightly smaller than stated (at least when stated in metric), and my old LC are at least 1cm smaller than stated what is stated on the base.
