Jfood needed Izzy (MSP) and it came through

jfood Jun 8, 2009 07:28 PM

After a less than great meal, Jfood decided to soak his paws in some ice cream. He set his Nav system to Izzys and drove a couple of miles.

Since the weather in MSP was 50 degrees there was less people than his last visit. He wandered up and down looking at the flavors. He decided on Chocolate Oreo, Dulche de Leche and his Izzy scoop was Cherry Cordial.

All three were very good. He thought the vanilla oreo last week was a little better since the chocolate ice cream fought with the oreo. The cherry was very good and the fruit itself was still soft (Jfood would guess significant liquor keep it below the freeze point).

And the great news was the dulche. This was out of site great. And after the scoops had passed his lips, Jfood decided that the Dulche is now his favorite ice cream so far, replacing the Organic Banana at Pumphouse. Both of these are great, but that caramel sauce, just blew Jfood away.

Jfood, our tastebuds think alike! I love Izzy's Dulce de Leche, too. I'm glad you were able to salvage your evening.

P.S. For others who are looking for that cherry ice cream, it's actually called "Cherries Jubilee". It's my husband's favorite flavor. And, yes, it has a small amount of booze in it (Asbach Uralt brandy, according to the web site). Yum!

To each his/her own of course, but in defense of Pumphouse, I would argue that the ability to make a great caramel is not in the same category as the ability to make a great ice cream. Sauce is not equal to ice cream. Caramel makes anything seem great if you love caramel. But I think it is a different animal than an overall ice cream flavor. That's my ice cream math and philosophy for the day.

Please give jfood a little more credit than calling an ice cream better than the organic banana at pumphouse because of the caramel sauce. Should jfood not like the organic banana at pumphouse because the bananas were over the top?

The bananas were not over the top as I recall- what I like about pumphouse is that the flavors are well-balanced with quality ingredients. And I recently had some homemade caramel and it was great. But you said specifically that the caramel was your deciding factor in the izzy's flavor so that's why I made my comment. Really, I think pumphouse and Izzy's are very different businesses, Pumphouse is using a lot of organic dairy products and no colorings and a more moderate amount of sugar- that puts it closer to my heart than izzy's. To be truthful, the need to rank foods and restaurants on this board is not in my opinion the best use of the board. I would prefer to see more of what jfood has done which is to give detailed reviews of places as he attends them. And if people are going to rank, then I think they should only compare businesses that are more similar than Izzy's and Pumphouse. Just my opinion.

What can be more alike than comparing two ice cream shops? And what can be more subjective than personally preferring one flavor to another?

My experience on CH is that people rank places all the time and have wildly different reasons for doing so. See the constant arguments regarding THE BEST Juicy Lucy, for example. I appreciate jfood for taking the time to visit all these places and write thoughtful opinions about them... something I feel the locals don't do enough of. A little ranking and new-thread-starting can't hurt.

What I objected to was that he already had ranked pumphouse banana at the top, then he changed it. So if someone is searching here to find out what's the best, it will be banana pumphouse on Monday, then izzy's dulce on Wednesday. Seems silly to me.

Eating is a journey with no end, always trying to find better. Was the best dish you ate in 1980 the one that will always be the best? Jfood hopes not. Should one wait until a nano-second before death to choose his favorite meal? No, it's a process.

And if jfood finds a better ice cream this week, next week and the months hereafter, he will then state that the bar just keeps getting raised.

I don't think I'd want to live a life where my opinions on Wednesday were the same as my opinions on Monday, regardless of what happens on Tuesday.

But, I think jfood is quickly learning why "best ice cream" is such a contested debate around these parts.

I'd summarize my feelings on Pumphouse vs Izzy's this way:

If I were only going to have one scoop of ice cream in the rest of my life, I'd want it to come from Pumphouse. They make the best version of any single flavor. However, the flavors are limited, and they don't always have a flavor that I'm in the mood for.

Thus, I much prefer going to Izzy's - it is the superior ice cream shop. At Izzy's, I can always find something that will fit my mood, and it will pretty much always be outstanding. The gap between an Izzy's scoop and a Pumphouse scoop isn't that big.

Oh but Danny, if they pick your flavor in the Izzy's People's Choice, the gap will be a bit wider then!

Danny- that analysis is worthy of King Solomon- you were able to show that the place that makes the 'best version of any single flavor' is not where you prefer going, and that in fact the place you prefer to go is the 'superior ice cream shop' . What can I say in the face of that? I'm stunned, but still happy to know where I'll find you when you go for that last scoop....:)

                        Faith

Out of respect for you and the great ice cream your town has, jfood will have his last scoops of the week tonight at Pumphouse. No matter where and what he eats he will go there. The report back may be tomorrow since he has a stack of reading to do at the hotel tonight and back to the east tomorrow, but you may eat your words after jfood eats more Pumphouse if he finds one he likes better than the Izzy DdL. (Is DdL the good or bad Cholersterol?)

We are fans of Izzy's and I highly recommend the Chocolate Dulce de Leche if you ever see it in the case. I like Pumphouse, too, but I live near Izzy's and my toddlers are not really interested in driving half an hour for ice cream :).

Izzy's was listed as one of the best 9 Ice Cream shops in the US according to MSN. Obviously the tester didn't try every possible ice cream place but it is cool that Izzy's made the list. Here is the link to the article:
