Some places in our rotation for Dinner/Lunch:
- Cafe Carolina - Encino/Tarzana - awesome little family owned restaurant, Italian and American dishes - we love this place!
- The Stand - upscale hotdogs (!)
- Kabuki - WH - good, standard Japanese fare
- Mr Cecil's Ribs - Sherman Oaks - great ribs

Breakfast
We often head to the Westside for breakfast with the kids, but when we want to stay local its:
- Pane E Dolce - great cafe in Sherman Oaks
- The Baker - WH - good french toast and coffee
- Corner Bakery - Calabassas - lots to choose
- Cheesecake Factory - WH

please follow up or email me directly with other ideas. We too are always looking for great places in the WH/Tarzana/Encino area!

Best sit-down Mexican can be found in Chatsworth at Los Toros, on Devonshire just East of Topanga.

For fast food/take out Mexican, we love Tapatio on the SW corner of Fallbrook and Victory.

For breakfast, you can't beat Bobby's on the north side of Ventura just West of Fallbrook.

Gorikee, a new bistro tucked away in the mammoth plaza at Topanga and Ventura has gotten rave reviews here. Chow hubby and I went last week and were impressed.

Other local favs include Cavaretta's Italian deli on Sherman Way west of Topanga, Dan's Super Subs on Ventura just west of Shoup, GoMart for sushi at Sherman Way and Shoup.

The Little Cafe is so much better than Bobbies, maybe not the retro decor but at least Cafe will cook your eggs "up and easy" with liquid yolks. But even better is Pat's Topanga Grill, on Topanga about 3 miles south of Ventura. Delicious breakfasts and wonderful ham steaks.

For breakfast in Woodland Hills, we recommend
"Cables" on Ventura and De Soto....A very nice
breakfast menu...in a delightfully bright, clean and well
decorated counter/dining room.

IMHO serves the best coffee in the SFV...always
fresh "Apfels" coffee...with cup "and" saucer,
and good quality silverware.

Apfel's Coffee is the worst kind of corporate slop, one of the reasons (along with Farmer's Bros) that Starbucks caught on so quickly and succeeded so well in Southern California.

Restaurant owners certainly may have economic incentive to choose a product like Apfel's, which generally provides and maintains expensive equipment for its customers, but there is no gustatory reason for its existence. A coffeeshop's reliance on substandard beans is a compelling reason to stay away from it.

Since many are recommending eateries well beyond the confines of Woodland Hills, for Mexican try Carrillo's Deli on Sherman Way, around Mason in same center as Smart & Final. Better food than Los Toros, yet lacks the Toros margarita-type dinner ambiance. Los Toros is very good, when compared to Chevys, Torito, etc. Second the Gorikee recommendation, especially since $3 corkage allows some quality wines consumption, if desired.

I'm not sure where you are in Woodland Hills, but in Tarzana between Tampa and Reseda are two of my downscale favorites.

Los Tapatios for Mexican. It's on Ventura Blvd between Yolanda and Wilbur in a strip mall. Very good taqueria. Everything is homemade.

Cho Cho San for sushi. Ventura, one block east of Vanalden. Low-price sushi. It has a conveyer belt, but most people order directly from the chefs. The specialties are the Rock 'n' Roll handroll (baked scallops and avodaco) and the spicy tuna (among the best I've ever had). Not traditional in the slightest.

The only barbeque places I know in that area are El Paso Barbecue and My Brothers. I haven't been to either in ages (at least in the past decade), so I can't speak for their current quality. If you go further east, there is Mr. Cecil's Ribs in Sherman Oaks and Dr. Hogly Wogly's in Van Nuys. Personally, I've never been terribly impressed with either, but there are fans on this board.

Another rec, even though it's not any of the above categories, is Big Mama's Kitchen for soul food. It's further west at 22526 Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills.

Breakfast places: Bobby's (a real old-fashioned diner), Corner Bakery (both at the Macy's mall on Topanga Canyon, and at Calabasas), and Marmalade (Calabasas Commons)

Mexican: LaPaz (a Yucatecan Mexican place on Las Virgenes Road in Agoura)--specialties are snapper Veracruz and roasted goat-- also the usual swimming-in-cheese-and-beans ersats Mexican stuff.

Bakery: Edie's on Sherman Way east of Topanga. Austrian pastries, gorgeous bitesize minipastries, etc.

Health food: Gotta try the Vegan Reuben Sandwich at Follow Your Heart on Sherman Way. Made from goodnes-knows-what tempeh-like stuff--but delicious and very virtuous and California-ish.

Brent's Deli is great, the best smoked whitefish, the best chocolate cake, everything baked is pretty good.

Mission Burrito in Canoga Park is also great.
