Grendel's, Redline or someplace else in Harvard Sq

The bar or lounge at Rialto (in the Charles Hotel) is worth a look. They serve real cocktails, have excellent food (including 3 for $10 small apps), and lack any hipster pretensions. Maybe it's just me but I find Grendel's and Grafton St. unbearable. Charlie's isn't bad for what it is, but certainly more "beer" than "cocktail." Casablanca's always been hit or miss and is too expensive for what they deliver cocktail-wise.

I would enthusiastically second Tory Row. I have been a couple times and find it extremely comfortable, it attracts a nice crowd, and the prices are good. I haven't had the food, but gather from others that it is no worse, and probably better, than Grendel's or Redline.

Grafton Street is nice for cocktails. Also Wagamama's upstairs from Redline may be fun/different vibe. OM also has a really nice vibe for cocktails.

charlie's kitchen, since most unpretentious things in the sq. are just decent, charlie's isnt a bad choice, and cheaper than whats been mentioned.

The Wagamama's in Harvard Square is super loud if it is busy and the communal seating might be a little awkward for drinks and appetizers.

I'd second OM though. I've never been disappointed with the food.

Haven't been yet, but newcomer Tory Row in the old Greenhouse Cafe space could be fun to check out.

Someplace else: Noir at the Charles Hotel has a great atmosphere, and from 5:00 or 5:30 to 7:30 (and sometimes later) all menu items are drastically reduced. And the food is really good. Much better than Grendel's.

I haven't had the food there, but I've gone to Casablanca several times for pre or post-dinner drinks and really like the place!

Grafton Street is decent food (nothing too special) and I think they have an okay beer selection.

I like the bar at Casablanca too. Noir might be considered pretentious but I like their evening specials and it's comfortable. Bar at Rialto? Garden at the Cellar? Maybe that gets too loud.
