I will be in Huntsville for a couple of nights next month and am looking for dining suggestions. First night - casual and easy, second night, a little more upscale.

Was looking at Spencer's Tall Trees possibly for second night.

Anyone have comments on Dolce Vita? And shall we completely pass on 3 Guys and a Stove? All of the reviews have been awful.

Thanks.

We have a cottage near Huntsville so we know the scene pretty well.

First, definitely pass on Three Guys and a Stove. I absolutely hate that place. I've never had a good meal there.

If you want a family style diner with great fish and chips, go to Westside on Muskoka Road 3, closer to Hwy 11. Great halibut and chips and okay burgers and club sandwiches. The best thing about this place is the homemade pies. The coconut cream pie is better than the one a Scaramouche :-)

Dolce Vita is very competant Italian. I would recommend it.

Tall trees is good too. I really like the chicken liver appetizer, but ask them to cook it medium.

Also, there is an upscale, modern steak house on Main St. call Aroma. I haven't been there yet but I heard it's good.

For a really excellent lunch, go to the Butcher's Daughter. Best sandwiches in town. The Rueben is great as is the bacon cheese dog. They make great homemade soups. The one I had last weekend was the paprika beef (aka goulash). It was so good that I bought a container to go (steep at $9.99 but it was worth it). We're having it tonight. They make great stuff that can be taken away for a quick dinner at the cottage, like lasagna, etc. etc. It's a really good place.

Not a restaurant, but there's also the Farmer's Daughter. I haven't been to the Huntsville shop, but their store on Kingston Rd. in Toronto is charming, with good, home-cooked takeout food and baked goods. Also a homemade line of condiments, sauces and frozen foods. And they carry local, seasonal produce. http://www.fresheverything.ca/

Visited the Westside Diner last weekend. It seems to be very popular with the locals. Decor is homey but most importantly, the food was tasty. Halibut fish and chips was excellent. Lemon meringue pie was good, not great. I should have selected the chocolate pie (can't recall what they call it) but couldn't eat it due to dairy.

Will make this a yearly destination for fish and chips! Thanks for the rec!

Any time. I'm up here now. Dial-up sucks.

I think we'll go to Westside on our way back to TO tomorrow. You're right, the halibut and chips are great. And the coconut cream pie is the best I've ever had.

We have a cottage near Huntsville also. Last year my wife made a reservation for the 2 of us at Tall Trees. A few minutes after we arrived, the hostess [I gather chef's wife] yelled across the bar that she would be with us in a minute. We then stood in the entry for at least 20 minutes with no further attention from anyone [let alone a seat or offer of a drink], adn the place was not very full. The table in front of us was a table of 4, already seated when we arrived. They started to get their drink order after we had been there for 15 minutes or so. They told us they had been there for a good 15 minutes before we came in. I'm not sure if the hostess was having a bad night but she was quite rude in her tone, aside from ingoring us. Feeling not overly welcomed, we left and I decided never to go back. I should say that my wife was there 2 times several years ago - she had good food, but poor service [and attitude from Ms. Spencer].

The attitude was glaring because we find the people in the area very friendly.

We plan to try the Norsemen Restaurant for our next "Huntsville occasion" - it has been recommended to us by a number of people in the area.
P.S. we went into Butcher's Daughter a few weeks after they opened last year, and found their prices over the top [even compared to Bruno's or Pusateri's in Toronto].

Hey there,

Pass on 3 Guys. I think it was good some time ago (in a past life??!), but it has expired. Ended up eating there a couple of weeks ago because I wanted to give it one last try, anyways. Absolutely unremarkable. The chef also screwed up my order - included raisins in a pasta dish instead of beans and I pointed it out - at the end of the meal as it took me awhile to figure it out. The manager said she'd take it off the bill, but then didn't. Whatever. I won't be back. Ever.

I will root for the Butcher's Daughter. Damn good sandwiches there. Hands down. Would have eaten there if it was open. I noticed that their food products (honey; jam; dried pasta etc) seem to be pricey, but I didn't think our lunch was.

I've eaten at Aroma mostly when I want a liquid lunch. :) I am in Huntsville to visit my in-laws. Although I have eaten dinner there once - 2 summers ago?? I vaguely recall being pleased and full. And at that time they offered a flight of 3 wines, which is lovely in my estimation.

Have fun!
