30th birthday dinner before going to Second City

BF's turning 30, and we're going out in his native Chicago (OK, he's from the North Shore) for dinner, then 8pm showing of Second City comedy. I am terrifyingly new to Chicago, and know nothing. We are fairly adventurous diners, but can't afford anything too pricey. There will be vegetarians in the group, too. Help?
