There's a place in Santa Ana -- near So. Coast Plaza called, interestingly, Hans'. I've not been there but trusted Hounds vouch for it as among the best.

There are several ice cream afficionados here, so I know you'll get other ideas.

FunwithFood, if you're going all the way to Upland, be sure to do THE ICE CREAM WALK. Take a walk between Dr. Bob's on C Street and Bert n Rockys' up on Foothill. Burns off the calories and you get to try TWO great ice creams instead of one. At Bert & Rocky's, try the Cream Cheese Chocolate Chip! At Dr. Bob's, can't beat the Tahitian Vanilla with bittersweet hot fudge on top.

When I was a kid -- back when we rode dinosaurs to school -- every Sav-on had an ice-cream counter. A cone cost a nickel (as did skate keys, but I digress).

That was our ultimate treat -- a Sav-on ice-cream cone. The usually had peppermint (not just in December) --mmmm, mmm! They listed a hot fudge sundae for 50 cents, but that was too rich for our blood. We were a nickel cone family.

My mom's fave was a two-scooper: one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of peach --weird, hmm?

I know it has to do with the extremely high sugar content, but Rite-Aid has the most fantastic mint chocolate chip.

Oddly enough, Ralph's market brand of Premium Ice Cream does a pretty darn close replica of the mint chocolate chip at Rite-Aid. I also really like the cookies and cream flavor.

Hee Hee, you remember skate keys, and I remember radio tubes in a big lecturn-looking display. Anyway, my father used to get three (!) scoops when we'd go to Thrifty's (they were cylindrical scoops. a triple looked just ridiculous). I looked forward to going because of the yummy mint n'chip and chocolate chip, but I was just embarrassed to death of my father with the triple.

Yeah, Thrifty/Rite-Aid chocolate chip is so awesome. Count me in among the dinosaurs because growing up, the scoops at Thrifty were a nickel each. My mom wouldn't let us get triples though! I'm a fan of the shaved chocolate school of chocolate chip ice cream, so I also love Baskin-Robbins chocolate chip. I ate about a thousand gallons of it while working at the old Baskin-Robbins on San Vicente just east of 26th Street in Brentwood, in the 1975-76 time frame. Ralph's Private Selection does a pretty good chocolate chip along this vein, and I really love the Ralph's Private Selection chocolate chip cookie dough which adds little, uniform-shaped bites of cookie dough. Not that I don't like my Dr. Bob's but sometimes super-premium butterfat content is too rich, or the vanilla base flavor is too vanilla-y.

There's a wonderful egalitarian consideration with the diversity of recommendations here. For what it's worth, the San Francisco August Restaurant Issue picked Ben & Jerry's #2 and Cold Stone Creamery #3, only fitting for me since I'm heading out to pick up the latter's 'strawberry shortcake' and 'coffee lover's delight'.

1. Bert & Rocky's in Upland and Claremont2. Bennett's (not Gill's) in Farmers Market3. Dr. Bobs Banana Nut Choc Chip available hand-packed at Frank's Famous in Montrose. Tahitian Vanilla and the Doc's Choc Flavors are good, too. Didn't care for the oatmeal-heavy cookie dough3. Fosselmann's Macapuno, Banana Walnut or Dark Chocolate (tastes like dry canned cocoa powder!)4. Eiger's in Brentwood (sign says homemade but the coconut tastes suspiciously like McConnell's of Santa Barbara) 5. McConnell's of Santa Barbara (scoop shops in Encino and La Canada/Montrose)6. Cold Stone Creamery7. Breyer's Peanut Butter 'n Fudge8. Dreyers Dreamery Deep Dish Apple Pie9. Double Rainbow at Trader Joes10.Kirkland Premium Vanilla at Costco (the frozen yogurt outside isn't bad, either). (and for lowfat you can't beat Starbucks Lowfat Latte Ice Cream)
