Table (or bar seat) for one
I'm in Philadelphia for a few weeks and was looking for some restaurant suggestions. Staying in the University City area but have no problem moving about. Price is also not a terrible concern as long as food lives up to it. Ill be eating alone so I was looking for either restaurants that are good for single diners or ideally nice restaurants that have full menus at the bar or good bar menus. Thanks in advance for the help!
I am a widower so I often eat alone, however I always eat at counters, never tables. My favorites are: Osteria for everything Italian, Tintos for everything tapas, Mix for good pizza, O!Sheas for friendly, Marathon on Spruce for salads, Sassafras for memories, and anywhere in Reading Terminal.
The piano bar room in White Dog Cafe is nice, and you can sit at the bar and get the full dining room menu. (not the main bar/ first bar you come to, you have to get the hostess to seat you there). The food is good and the atmosphere really can't be beat, and it's right by Penn.
I've also eaten at Rx alone and it's small and cozy enough that it's not weird, also in Univ. City.
In University City, Distrito has a big bar downstairs and is great, I've never eaten at the bar there but I suspect they offer the full menu at the bar, all the chef's other restaurants (of which Tinto is one) offer the menu at the bar.
You definitely need to eat at the bar at Ansill, my favorite restaurant in the city and they have a great happy hour ($1 oysters and a couple food and drink specials). Lately I've been going there for happy hour and just staying for dinner at the bar.
If in University City, try Local 44 (44th and Spruce). New(er) gastro pub with about 18 micro taps and 2 cask taps. Good pub fare. I had a cuban sandwich the other night that was excellent. Nice crowd and bartenders were friendly as I sat at the bar and watched the Stanley Cup Finals. You can find their menu through menupages.com.
Chinatown has some nice selections that I've never felt "awkward" at eating alone, either at the bar or at a table (Vietnam Palace being one of my favorites).
Audrey Claire is a nice byob that has some "counter" seating where you can watch the chefs, could be a good choice for single dining and I've always enjoyed the food.
Another thought is you can always ask on Chowhound for a dinner partner or two, to make trying some of the byobs without bar seating worth giving a try.
