West Oakland: Another market opens today (6/6) - Mandela Foods Cooperative

On Friday, I was a day early. However, I got to peek in the window.
It doesn't seem like a large market, around the size of Bi-Rite with a produce section about the same size.
There are LOTS of bulk grains, beans, etc. The dairy section looked nice. Don't know what else is there since that is all I could see. It is a very nice looking-store and the produce looked great.
It is next to the 99 cents store and there is a parking lot in back of that store.
According to the website "The Cooperative will offer local goods, wholesome, fresh and affordable foods grown on family farms,"
They have been selling some items next to Indus Village on the weekends and the prices have been wonderful and the quality of produce great.
It will be interesting to see if the prices are good at the store as well.
They are right across the street from the BART station. The site says they are putting an onliine system in place so that you can order groceries online and have them delivered to your car in the West Oakland BART lot.
There's a great pizza / bbq place around the corner on 8th that opened on Halloween in 2008, Popo's Pizza.
Revolution Coffee down the street is a very cozy place to have a cup of Uncommon Grounds coffee and / or have a simple breakfast, soup, sandwich or salad. The soup is vegan and there is also a vegan sandwich on the menu.
