Bahia is the only place in get the papas rolled tacos, but I would not describe there salsa as kick ass.
Bahia's is my favorite place for papas taquitos and I get the 'kick ass' salsa from the boys in the kitchen who have their special sauce..
So they have an In-and-Outish secret menu for the regulars? :)
What's the code word, BeachChick? I may be in that area this evening, and those sound very good to me.

Without a doubt the most sublime rolled tacos in SD are found at Aqui es Texcoco on S. Broadway in Chula Vista. Flautas de Barbacoa
Permalink | Reply
Yes. The rolled tacos de papas here are outstanding. The lamb ones are okay too, but the flautas de papas are better.

Dude...that is exactly what I'm talking about!

Aqui es Texcoco is today's SignOn Daily Deal: $12 for $25 worth of food.

Wonder why they are doing this, there chow is excellent and reasonable. I'm concerned.

I was there on a weekend several months ago, and it was full to capacity.

So why sell for less than 1/2 price? Paco has a great following.
It is likely that they do not do as well on weekdays, and want to expand their customer base .

Re: Paco's place and the give away. He always gives a little extra. He does gangbuster biz in the am and weekends, weekdays eves could be better. He also has discount tix in the local paper. Worth it if you go more than twice a week.I like to go in the afternoon between lunch and dinner. Standard fare: PANCITA (sells out early),Huitlacoche quesadilla (fresh or not) ; dark salsa to die for and the best African jamaica for your disgestion. The flan can't be overlooked either. I take out cups of the salsa negra...great with fresh chicharonnes from Northgate. Had them for Super Bowl Sunday.

Thanks Encinitan...et al..

BC, knowing that you're not a huge carnivore, gotta try the Quesadilla with Huitlacoche, Zucchini Flower, Mushroom, nirvana!
I would second that recommendation, but ask first if the huitlacoche is fresh or canned.
My guess would be canned, readly available.
I'm trying the Quesadilla today too...but never had Huitlacoche, is that the corn that's moldy?
I printed that bad boy out this morning and SO excited!
I'll report back...
Huitlacoche is a black fungus that infects corn, Huitlacoches kernels have a smoky-sweet flavor. Also called Mexican truffle.
love truffles from Italy and think I want to hold out on the 'Mex Truffles' if they are canned.
to me, huitlacoche tastes exactly like what escargot would taste like if they ate nothing but morel mushrooms.
Yes, huitlacoche is corn fungus, also referred to as corn smut. It's naturally occuring infection on an ear of corn. It has a sort of earthy, mushroom-like flavor. Personally, I think it tastes like dirt, but I've grown to like it over the years.
Paco usually brings the fresh stuff across the border. Since this isn't corn season, I'm not sure what the availability of fresh huitlacoche is in Tijuana at the moment. It is available canned, but it's just not the same.
Canned may be a bit more 'civil' for the BC to cut her teeth on. Like scotch, especially something like Langavulin where it's really 'peaty', it's an acquired taste. Dirt... I always liked to think it was extremely 'earthy'.

Small but delicious flower quesadilla..it was lovely!

Went today for a late lunch with the $12 voucher and this place was incredible and delicious.
Service was fast and she was so sweet..can't wait to go back..the place was busy.
DH had a couple of borrego tacos which he really like.
The bean and potato taquitos kick some serious ass...love love love it!
Yeah, those potato flautas with their salsa negra are seriously good. More than worth the drive to CV.
Totally worth the drive and though that salsa negra wasn't hot, it sure was addicting.
The food was really good and wish more resto's would add papa flautas on the menu..with the crema Mexicano and shredded lettuce was so frigging good.
Worked out on the treadmill for an hour after that and drummed to Nirvana for another hour to burn off those cheesy queso bombs of love and happiness!
Stay thristy my friend..

I forgot to mention DD that when I was leaving the restaurant, a very handsome, well appointed man with a baseball cap, got into his black 7 series BMW and for a moment, I thought I was seeing our favorite guy, the most interesting man in the world!
Then I realized that the XX man, wouldn't wear a baseball cap!

Lucy's Taco Shop on 2nd and C, or 3rd and C (in between the bail bonds places) has good, classic rolled tacos. What makes the dish so good is the hot sauce - heavy on garlic and chilies.
Interesting.
I always looked at that place, but was always hesitant because of the trolley line location.
I completely understand - the place is probably second in creepiest looking Mexican places in Downtown (with the first being Mexican Fiesta's shack). But there are seriously good eats to be had there.
Agreed - discovered this place 6 months ago, despite working a stone throw's away for the past 9 years... never gave it a thought because it is indeed creepy looking...

Had Bahia Don Bravo's rolled tacos today, not my fave - but could have been an off day as they were slammed! But loved, loved, loved the lobster burrito that you have been raving about. A new fav in the hood.

Isn't it great sitting outside on the patio, watching the waves with a cold Pacifico and eating a lobster burrito with lobster chunks so big that you need to have someone who knows the Heimlich maneuver nearby..

Craving me some potato rolled tacos...

I don't know from potatos, but Super Sergio's has great beef rolled tacos.

The smoky mole salsa along with the green sauce was excellent.
Washed it down with some Hibiscus horchata.
Can't wait to go back!

We just went to Aqui es Texcoco today, based on the CH recs. We absolutely loved the rolled tacos and the lamb consomme. Had seconds. I had the lamb barbecoa sopas and it was fabulous. Clean, comfortable and great prices. My family was impressed.

Did you get the soft drink pairings?
I prefer the '87 jamaica.
I think the temp is off in their cellar- the '87 is a fine example of the Jamaica label, but if improperly handled in the chiller with the sprayer in the big translucent box on top it can change the nature of it's finish enough to be distastefully unacceptable.
The Pepsi (of any year) is a safer bet, and it's fuller, rounder flavor notes go better with the broad spectrom of the Sergio's palate.

Temps are off in their cellar..Ha Ha Ha..

I personally think the best pairing is the '11 Horchata. Great notes of cinnamon and sugar with just a touch of milk. Tannin level seems to be non existent though.
Ah! D'Accord! The portamento notes of the sweet milk played against the bite of the food results in a cadenza of flavor and textures.
iL BullĂ has got nothing on Chef Sergio.

i know this is going to offend most taco purists, but my most favorite rolled tacos of all time are from this hole in the wall by the santee public library. they are by no means anything special, but hold a dear place in my heart. my friends lived nearby during high school and we would eat 5 rolled tacos stuffed with shredded beef and drenched in this pale green avocado cream sauce and then walk across the street and get a blizzard from dq. how i miss you, teenage metabolism....

Ahhhh you had me at "blizzard from dq" and "teenage metabolism". I'll try these rolled tacos just based on these descriptions. Any other reason to go to Santee other than for the DQ?

Tried Nico's on Morena after reading recommendations here. The shredded beef rolled tacos were quite good. I will definitely be back to sample some more items, now that I live so close.
El Patron (Pomerado Road) in Scripps-Poway Parkway make good rolled tacos (and burritos). Their service isn't very friendly but easily overlooked because of the food. Their Mira Mesa location has never had the same quality as their Scripps location.
