Jamaican food

Hi,

I need help finding excellent Jamican food in manhattan..I know there are better options in Brooklyn but we'll be in manhattan for my husband's b-day and he loves authentic jamaican food especially oxtails..please help!

While there is Negril, there is also Orchid's on 9th ave in the 40s. It is not really jamaican but more like Trini. I prefer the Negril @ 23rd that the one further south.

jamaican flavors was my favorite. closed for a year now i think. negril, the food seems fresh to me and the flavors arent bad. but it didnt ring of authentic jamaican to me (at least not what ive had). they actually plate your food etc. me, i prefer just a bowl of rice smothered in meat and gravy. i guess its good both ways. i wasnt disappointed with my meal at negril.

Also, some people mentioned Treichville, South Beach Cafe, maroon's, Florence? Any opinion on these?

Florence's is closed, alas! I had thought that Treichville and SBC were African, not Jamaican - different, but still good! And my guess is that you know you'll probably be more successful in finding good Jamaican if you venture to the Outer Boroughs and their board!

funny you mentioned that- I was there for my b-day and I guess they don't take reservations so after waiting for 1.5 hours, we still didn't get in. May be we'll have better luck this time..

Negril is an upscale restaurant; which is why the portions are skimpy and the prices are pretty high (especially for Jamaican). I thought the food was pretty good but not worth the price.
