Visiting U of C student

This is a no brainer. Valois on 53rd (1500 block) is the place. I have been eating there for almost 50 years. That includes the previous location on Lake Park Ave. It is our President's favorite cafeteria. Wonderful. Last I heard the Dixie cafe had not yet closed so you may be able to try it before it closes. I am sorry to say, I have not found worthwhile food in Chinatown on a par with say San Francisco or Vancouver

Not clear whether you want the restaurant to be in Hyde Park? That's the U of C neighborhood and it's sort of an island in a big ocean of don't-go-there. HP is a good 20 minutes' drive from downtown. If you want to be able to stroll to dinner from an HP apartment, let us know and we will recommend something.

When I was at U of C (decades ago), Chinatown was where I went for convenient, affordable food. This is only feasible if you have a car. My personal preference is Moon Palace, but there is lively debate on this Board as to best places in Chinatown.
If by convenient, you may within Hyde Park, then you might consider Medici on 57th Street.

Take 55 or 55X (55th St.) W to Red Line. Red Line north a couple of stops to Chinatown. There's also a campus/CTA bus (#170?) that goes from Reynolds Club to Red Line (altho this may run only when school is in session). Garfield/Red Line stop not recommended later at night unless you're familiar with urban environments.
For more suggestions, search Hyde Park, altho note that one of the more highly touted (by Barack Obama among others), Dixie Kitchen is scheduled to close 6/7.
