Barbecue in Virginia and NC near I-95

  • 7

I will be driving between DC and Chapel Hill, NC. I welcome any suggestions for barbecue within 20 minutes of I-95.

  1. Are you really going to be taking 95 into NC? 85 would be the most direct route.

I always recommend K&L Barbeque in Hopewell, which is right off 295. It's right up there with some of the best places in eastern NC.

well, you have to take 95, to get great Q; once you get too far west of it, you can't find Eastern-style anymore.

that said, i suggest doug saul's, in nashville. it's about 2 min off the highway, assuming you're planning on taking 95 > 64 > 40. take the momeyer exit after nashville, hang a left at the top of the ramp, and it'll be about a half a mile down the road, on your left.

i apologize - i meant the restaurant is on the right-hand side of the road. and that exit is of off of 64, about 10-15 min after you get off of 95. sorry!

    2. We went ot Parker's in Wilson NC and had the Family meal. The meal had about 8 things. some like fried chicken, beans and brunswick stew are exellant , the pulled pork is good, some things like some fried bread are not worth eating.
For pulled pork the Tastee Hut (exit 33 off I-95 from the north and exit 31 from the south) was better. Also try their hush puppies.

Parker's hasn't been good for a while. Avoid at all costs.

I'll second the Tastee Hut, which is in Stony Creek, Va. They have good fried chicken too, but there's a wait involved, as they fry to order.

Second that re Parker's being not so good.

As you go through Richmond its very easy to get to great BBQ at Buzz and Ned's. From 95S, take exit 78/Boulevard. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp onto the Blvd., go past the baseball stadium a few blocks and its on the left. Indoor and outdoor seating. Excellent ribs, pulled pork, beans, cuke salad. Do not go to Bills BBQ, which you have to drive right past to get to Buzz and Neds. Terrible mushy watery pork sandwiches that should not be allowed to be called BBQ.

      2. Weldon, NC! First exit off I-95 south in NC! Left at bottom of exit and down about 1/4 mile on the left! Ralph's!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Been there for ever and a great buffet with BarBQ, fried chicken and seafood. All you can eat just look for the red neon pigs on the roof! Wherever I'm at in NC I'm eventually eating at Ralph's before I go back to Florida!!
