DFW - Peruvian Guinea Pig - Cuy

Does anyone know where, or if, I can find this dish in the DFW area? I tried it last year on a trip to Peru and loved it. I've heard that you can buy it frozen in Houston. I'd be willing to grill it at home if I can find a market that sells it. I know this is a little bit out there, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah..I know they're cute, but these were bred as food. I had it grilled with spices and it tasted like a meatier dark-meat chicken/pork cross. Haven't really tasted anything like it before or after (and I've tried some really weird stuff in China)...

    2. I've seen them on Andrew Zimmern's show. I'll pass, thank you.

      1. Didn't you see the movie Bolt? -No, really to each his own. I get to some pretty far out there places for food shopping on occasion. If I come accross anything like this, I'll let you know.....

        1. Let us know if you find any place that servers the critters. I would really like to try them. It falls in my "cute food" category. Lamb, Rabbit, Deer all cute yummy food.

            Why don't you try, Petco?

          2. haha i love peruvian food and was thinking about trying cuy....until one day i saw a frozen clear plastic bag of them in a freezer in a restaurant in corona, queens.

now to be fair i bet it tastes ok, but i couldn't go there after that.

they stink, they bite.. I would gladly eat one. If there is a buffet I would be good for 5 or 6.

            2. So.....no help then...snarky comments aside...any real advice would be greatly appreciated.

why not just go try it and report back? i'm going to need some inspiration before i can order them.

              2. I don't remember cuy on the menu, but there's a Peruvian restaurant- Gran Machu Picchu- on Northwest Hwy, in Garland. Perhaps they could give you a lead on where to find guinea pig locally.

Have you tried any of the smaller carnicerias around town? I would think with such a large Central/South American population, someone in Dallas would certainly carry it. I can't personally recommend any that cater specifically to a Peruvian clientele, though.

                1. Did you ever find cuy? I have been looking for it too.

                  1. Where can you buy it in Houston?

Is it served at any Peruvian restaurant in Houston?

                    1. you can find a variety of cuy at the local pet shop. they have the added benefit of being fresh.
