Where to Find Good Selection of Valrhona Chocolate?

I'm hoping to find a store that sells a good variety of Valrhona brand chocolates. I've come across a couple of different Valrhona bars at Trader Joes, but am hoping to find a place that sells the whole range, or close to it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

PS: As a bonus question, where can one purchase bars of Amedei chocolate in NYC?

  1. Garden of Eden on Broadway and 107/108th has Amedei for sure.
I would assume they all carry it, call to check on stock.

Asking for Valrho and then Amedei, that is some transition.

"Asking for Valrho and then Amedei, that is some transition."

At the risk of sounding ignorant to the wonderful world of chocolate, I thought Valrhona was a superior, "premium" chocolate -- recognized by enough people as being among the "best" that bakers and p√Ętissiers sometimes highlight the fact that they've used it in the creation of some decadent concoction (i.e. "Valrhona Chocolate Souffle").

Your statement seems to suggest otherwise -- that it's on par with Baker's brand or Whitman's. Is it not considered one of the best brands out there?

I understand that Amedei is supposed to be in a league of its own -- the best of the best -- but that means any other chocolate I could have asked for would have been "some transition," no?

Thanks for the recommendation -- I'll be sure to get myself to Garden of Eden soon.

I think you have it quite right. When you pay for the Amedei, the leap will be felt. I am not saying it is better/equal/worse than Valrho or anything else. Merely stating that its rep and cost are considerably above.
Will note if I spot it anywhere else. Please call G of Eden if it is not on your way. I would hate for an empty trip on my word.

          Good advice: I'll call ahead.

By the way, have you had Amedei -- and if so, what was your experience like?

Does it warrant its lofty reputation?

Valrhona has been my number one fave for years. The few times I tried Amedei I was impressed, but it's more expensive and difficult to find, and Valhrona is still fabulous as far as I'm concerned. For the serious chocolate lover it's worth doing the comparison, but don't be surprised if you find Amedei to be comparable rather than superior to Valrhona.

Amedei's chocolate is darned nice, but if I had to choose between that and Valrhona's Palmira, for instance, I'd personally take the Palmira. The new Nyangbo 68% (Ghana) is amazing as well.

(Disclaimer: I just returned from a week at L'Ecole du Grand Chocolat Valrhona in Tain L'Hermitage, so I may be a bit biased).

But if you're really serious, it's hard to beat Steve DeVries' 77% Costa Rican.

Food Emporium on 3rd Ave & E 68th St has a room dedicated to chocolate, ranging from Scharffen Berger to Amedei and Valhrona (the latter has its own boutique selling chocolate bonbons).

      2. Whole Foods and New York Baking Co carry Valrhona, but I don't think that you'll find all of the commerically available items in a retail store.
Don't know how these compare to the Food Emporium East side chocolate store, but for a range of brands that's definately the place to check out.

Valrhona is definitely the best chocolate in the world !
I always go to their boutique on 3rd Avenue and 68th street, they have all the products in the chocolate shop inside the Food Emporium.
And their new packaging is absolutely fabulous !
I dont know if they have another boutique, next time I will ask, but this one is convenient for me
Amadei is fab as well, but honestly I dont think its worth the price difference...
