Le Violon d'Ingres

I am in Paris traveling by myself and have read good things about Le Violon d'Ingres in the 7th, right down the street from where I am staying in an apartment. Unfortunately I speak no French, and I walked by the restaurant today and saw the menu was completely in French. Do they have an English menu and in your opinion will I feel awkward dining alone there, especially not speaking any French?

Lots of singles at Cafe Constant, just a few steps away. We found ourselves there just about every day when we were in a ParisPerfect apartment across the street. Many people come in for a salad or single dish. I was once seated on the banquette next to vey polite black terrier; his partner, an elegant lady of a certain age, did not appreciate his attention to me, You will be welcomed.

It's also one of the few restaurants doing a great cassoulet that can be ordered for one person. Of course, that isn't really a summer dish, but what the hell.

Yes they do have an english menu, no question. You should stop in and make a reservation, they are often busy, would not try and walk in without notice.

I have eaten there many times, you will enjoy. Espesially order the souffle caramel beurre sale. Menu is 39e for 3 courses, supplements apply to some items.

Lobrano in his book says he finds it overpriced and recommends Les Fables de la Fontaine among the Constant restaurants. 39e doesn't sound so expensive to me. Do others have a reaction to this?

Maybe Lobrano's book was done before Violon reformatted, what is the publication date? It used to be a full blown gastronomic restaurant and was a bit pricey. In the summer of 2006, I think, they reformatted the restaurant to be more casual. That is when the prices dropped, also they started having 2 seatings per night, cut back on some of the service, for example you now must pour your own wine, not so many people standing around to pull your chair out for you, etc.

The pricing between VI and Fables is just about the same.
