We're doing some South Downs walking and are looking for casual but great places near Lewes or Rye. Any recommendations?l

If you're just in need of an afternoon tea (and not a fancy one), Simon the Pieman in Rye has very nice scones and a good cream tea.

Richard Phillips at Chapel Down in Tenterden was once recommended to me as having very good food, but I can't vouch for it personally.

i like richard phillips at chapel down, especially if you can sit outside on their terrace overlooking the vineyard.

i was in rye a few weeks ago and was recommended the george. it was v disappointing - both my starter and main were oversalted and the couple on either side of us had problems with their dishes. not a positive recommendation but hopefully helpful.

We used to love the Ram at Firle. Nice pub just off the hiking pathways that had quite good food and drink with a focus on local producers. It's been a while since we've been down that way, nowadays being focused in County Durham rather than Sussex, though. Quite close to Lewes.

The "Real Eating Company" in Lewes is good for breakfast or brunch.
