What is in your refrigerator right now?

Quick, think fast: what is in your refrigerator right now? I know it's nosy, but besides the usual eggs & milk, what different things do you have in cold storage that you either have plans for or not? Sort into the following categories....
Seasonal:
I have 1/2 a cantaloupe
an avocado
1/2 head of iceberg, 1/2 head of romaine, wild arugula
wild onions, parsley, basil

Leftovers:
3/4 Rotisserie chicken
peach & watermelon fruit salad
Biscuit shortcakes
hard boiled eggs, cooked bacon
wilted greens

New:
Bob's Big Boy Roquefort Dressing
Bear Pit BBQ sauce

Waiting...:
Mozzarella bocconcini
pancetta cubetti
chicken thighs in a buttermilk-herb marinade
camembert
super-lump crabmeat

Cant wait to go to the Farmer's Market tomorrow in Santa Monica, and get some more peaches, berries, tomatoes, greens and herbs. My fridge is actually quite bare, than the way it usually looks! Can I peek into your fridge?

2 gallons of milk, open (one fine, one probably needs to be chucked)
1/2 gallon whole buttermilk (prolly also dead)
leftover crappy beer (Busch light, Old Milwaukee, one lone can of PBR that was found outside and is surely skunky) - from a party this weekend
a huge almost empty jug of white zin - ditto
    blue Gatorade
    orange Gatorade
    heavy cream
    diet peach tea
    huge flour tortillas
a package of Keebler Fudge Stripes which I'm sure only has 2 in it
I think there is a similar package of Vienna Fingers unless my husband ate them (no clue why he keeps them in the fridge)
eggs - 18 pack, but not full
    dry sherry
leftover braised lemon chicken - some sauce and pickings, plus one whole piece that got left on the counter overnight and will probably have to be pitched
    leftover Southern-style green beans
    leftover steak
    leftover mashed sweet potatoes
    sour cream
huge jar of Mt. Olive dill pickles with 2 left
huge jar of Claussen dill spears
    bacon
    celery
    bag o salad
    parsley
organic dill that was bought & not used & probably bad
cherries (OK, I'm actually eating these right now)
a small container of lemon juice
    probably Sriracha
definitely a small jar of chili-garlic sauce (the one that has seeds)
Jack Daniels BBQ sauce (this stuff is foul)
    dijon mustard
    yellow mustard
    spicy brown mustard
    mayo
    ketchup
    pickled jalapenos
    Claussen sandwich slices
Kraft shredded mozz, 5-cheese Italian, and 4-cheese Mexican (sale) plus I think another open package of mozz
sliced Sorrento cheese - colby jack and chedder
some sliced deli Sara Lee provolone - this is horrid and there is at least 1/2 lb left, but it's still there because my daughter says she'll eat it
bottled salad dressing - at least 3, including the Ranch that is the reason the dill is going bad
    bacon bits

    Had to cheat and look:
butter (always in there - can't believe I forgot)
small square of Cabot extra sharp cheddar
    yes, there is sriracha
    Kalamata olives
    Polaner strawberry preserves
Bonne Maman blueberry preserves (can't believe I forgot I bought this! - it was refrigerated unopened)
    sweet relish
    Swanson organic chicken broth
    2 leftover chicken wings
    A1
    Frank's red hot
    hoisin sauce
    small bottle of water
    bread (not homemade)
    4 pork chops
    sour cream
    Land O Frost sliced turkey
a small bowl of some concoction of my daughter's - mayonnaise mixed with chili-garlic sauce, I think
an open package of the Kraft 5-cheese Italian

Thanks to DishDelish for replying to this. I finally have my food inspiration back. I have been meh for weeks!

Four dozen eggs? I thought I was bad buying a dozen & a half! Do you ever use them all or are they in rotation?!

And fwiw, you don't need to refrigerate your shallots. They keep fine with the onion & potatoes in the dark dry pantry.

And don't feel bad - I too am a little obsessive, bordering hoardish, by having 2 stocked pantries at all times! Hey, in CA, we never know when disaster may strike - literally!

I bake ALOT. More so for family, friends, and for treats to take to work, so that is why I go through eggs so quickly. I do rotate them, especially when I have fresh eggs. Thanks for the tip on the shallots, I'll take them out when I get home tonight.

Fruit/Veg: 3 lbs golden delicious apples, 2 lbs carrots, 5 small leeks that I need to use ASAP, 1 bell pepper, 5 serrano peppers. I get my weekly CSA delivery today so will have more vegetables tonight!

Beverages: 2 cartons of plain Silk and a lot of beer left over from a party. I only drink 1 beer/week, so I'm stocked for a while.

                lots of various condiments
                homemade salsa verde
                homemade apple jelly
                Scott's BBQ sauce
                string cheese
                jar of bacon grease
                turkey breast cold cuts
                cheddar cheese

In the freezer: pork fat back, bacon, 3 chicken leg quarters, several single serve containers of homemade soup, homemade paletas (strawberry/cream and pineapple/cream)

I'm sure there is more, but that's all I can think of right now.

Saute those leeks up in some butter until they caramelize and you have a wonderful confit.

Lots of stuff! But most notably a bunch of fruit including half a giant watermelon, apples, oranges, limes, grapes and fresh blueberries to make into muffins.
Also a homemade pizza (I made two yesterday and we ate one), and a bunch of pizza crust rolls to use later.
Some cooked Italian sausage left over from making the pizza.
Assorted sauces/dressings in various stages of used-upeness.
Kozy shack pudding cups and Publix yoghurts.
3 cartons of eggs (they were very cheap on the weekend), various grated cheeses, and packaged lunch meat and bacon from Publix
A big pitcher of homemade iced tea and our water filter jug.
And our leftover chicken pasta from dinner.

And our freezer is full of meat (chicken, pork and ground beef), frozen bread because we don't use it fast enough if it's out of the freezer, bagged frozen vegetables, icecream, a few lean cuisines for emergencies, and homemade muffins and cookies.

I also have assorted fruit that I keep collecting from the market, it just looks so good. I have to make a fruit salad.

I have half a roast pork loin, that was absolutely heavenly, made the house smell like rosemary & garlic when I made it. And two prime rib eyes, that I must use up tonight. Deciding between a steak chili with cornbread, or just slicing the steak into some blue cheese spaghetti....

I have a pound of ground beef for cheeseburgers for lunch for the boys tomorrow. A ton of cheese, as usual, including but not limited to cheddars, cotija, mozzarella in a few different forms, gruyere, parmeggiano wedge, the list goes on..

Also still have some fresh mushrooms, two ears of sweet corn, 2 overripe avocados, and lots of romaine & iceberg. I think I have my work cut out for me over the next few days!!

Party at Snix's house this weekend!

No wine, bring mixers and beer only. Must pair with smoky BBQ.

Good on the tomatoes, 'cause those were sounding like the weak link from Snix's fridge.

You're gonna need some of that la mer eye cream if you're up posting at 3 AM!!! Love that stuff & the shiseido.

Anyway I'm still working on leftovers from the weekend, but the new stuff is:

6 Holland peppers (on sale) to make into a roasted pepper pesto sauce
                                              Mangoes, blueberries

3 chicken breasts thawing for fajitas tomorrow

I see a beautiful dinner for four:

Salad: Romaine, mint, spinach, radish, leeks, and crabmeat; topped with bits of sauteed hickory smoked bacon and a light dressing.

Main: Individual pot pies that include: leftover cubed pot roast & tri tip, diced baked potatoes, diced and grilled veg melange.

Cheese course of Cabot sharp cheddar and camembert d'isigny.

Dessert of blueberries, mango, and raspberries - mixed with honey, served with ice cream, mixed with homemade yogurt & and honey, and as a crisp, buckle, or pie.

I think you're one of only a small handful on this list who have fessed up to something on the order of 'moldy chipotle pepper' and 'rotten eggs' - be careful with those chicken breasts. I suppose this will spawn a 'high meat' discussion now.

There is a strategy of shopping for things that don't spoil easily... you've got it started there with the capers and soy sauce and olives. Might be worth expanding on. It's one of several themes I keep working on.

You're right, Cinnamon, there's an art to hoarding so as not to have rotting food! With two full refrigerators, freezers and pantries, I believe I have achieved it! It involves a lot of rotation and discipline!!

I didn't think chipotles got moldy, I've had mine in the fridge so long, and have still used them! But yes, I think you need to get rid of the chicken, fistalee. Just let it go!

Chipotles do eventually get moldy, but it does take a long time. Luckily, they're not too expensive.

Veggies in desperation (please, cook us or throw us out! we can't take the waiting & wilting!)
Eggs- JUMBO (my husband panicked @ the grocery and claimed he thought I always bought JUMBO eggs. Who in cardiac-arrest-hell eats them??? I now own a dozen)
Normal eggs (I went shopping after he did)
                                                      2 1/2 gallons of Silk
                                                      Half-and-half
                                                      Butter (salted)
                                                      Better than Bullion (chicken)
                                                      Soy Sauce
                                                      Fresh Mozzarella
                                                      Huge container of grated Locatelli
Sharp Cheddar that I sliced because Mr.Lazy wouldn't cut his own
Hunk of Feta that I'm unsure of (poorly wrapped)
                                                      Jar-o-bacon fat
                                                      organic baby spinach
                                                      dannon non-fat plain
Boar's Head Sauerkraut (no idea why I didn't serve it w/the hotdogs that day)
Various containers of leftovers - Mr Lazy/Jumbo Eggs keeps telling me he'll eat them, and he does not.

Small freezer has ice, Phish Food & frozen baby brussels sprouts, boring stuff

Deep freeze has 2 turkeys, a nice big picnic, 12 lbs of chicken (boneless/skinless breasts), 6 lbs of split chicken breasts, 2 whole chickens, tilapia, grouper, 1lb. smoked salmon, oh god I can't remember what else is in there- puff pastry, phillo dough, some brownie failures that I tried from scratch... BACON... more frozen veggies (1/2 off sale!), chop meat (all vac-pac'd - but no chicken feet!!)

I buy extra large, they're actually cheaper than large. But never bought JUMBO.

Deep-fried capers with a salad along the lines of a Caesar are wonderful (w/filet mignon too). Haven't sussed out yet whether fresh are needed vs. drying and then deep-frying the fridge ones packed in brine.

For frying you want the dry salt packed rather than brined capers.A short cold water rinse, dry, then fry. They are a wonderful texture, salt, complex flavor addition to many things.salads, sauted fish, chicken and mango and onion relish/salsa

I am not sure I understand your categories, but I will give it a shot:

                                                            Seasonal: lettuce, cucumbers, onions

Leftovers: Thai takeout noodles, Chinese takeout kung pao chicken, the carcass of a rotisserie chicken, roasted potatoes, some green beans with almonds

New: sliced deli ham, cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, apples, Sam Adams, apple sausages from Trader Joe's, wasabi mayonnaise

Waiting: do you mean waiting to be eaten? That would be everything.

Well, I mean, waiting for some inspiration to do something with it, like an impulse purchase or one of your standard staples for a recipe you're making later on.

For example, I have some super lump pasteurized crabmeat that expires this summer, so it's waiting for me to make crab cakes or a seafood bake or a salad for cucumber cups. That was an impulse purchase, but I knew it had a long shelf life so I can play with it.

I also have some pancetta cubetti that I tend to use in a spaghetti carbonnara dish but I can also use in a salad, frittata or risotto. It's a staple - I usually pick it up when I see it at TJs, but it's waiting for me to decide.

I hadn't even bothered listing mine - there are so many! Some of you keep things in the fridge that I don't like hot sauces & soy sauce, worcestershire. Those are in the pantry.

I'm also lucky b/c I have a full second fridge & freezer in the garage. It was original to the house, not very old, but kept freezing my produce & eggs. So we replaced it w/ an armoir style amana and put the side by side outside. That's where most of the meat storage is, and a full wine & beer, sodas & waters, yogurts & extra cheese & lunchmeats for the kids are stored. That leaves the main fridge free to put in large dishes when prepping for a party.

And Phurstluv! Did you go to that booth at the Sta. Monica Farmer's Market and buy up all the onion sprouts!!?? You cecotrope! Leave some for me next time!

As for the avos, salads it is. Bought pinkertons, haas, fuertes, and gwens, and will treat the family to a taste test tonight.

We just never remember the igloo 'til we get there. Will put a post-it-note on the door right now.

Will be getting more peaches, too. The last batch was pretty bruised up and did not last the week. The strawberries from the place on 2nd, near the sprouts, are still amazingly sweet, a week later, in the fridge.

                                                                          2. re: Phurstluv

We bought a three-door/frreezer on the bottom s.s. fridge for the kitchen, which I love. I keep dark spices, beer and wine, not-often-used condiments and jellies and such downstairs, and use it when we entertain down there (downstairs is a huge open great room off the outdoor "kitchen"). Very useful.

Even tho it freezes stuff, I use it like a meat locker with some roast or ribs dry-brining or prepped to freeze. I also have it full of mini condiments that we usually take when we go rv'ing up the coast.

A GIANT bowl of greens (still sorta dirty) from the garden, radishes, fresh hen eggs, homemade yogurt, some shriveled up ginger root, cut lemons, lemon cake, hummus, a giant container of costco garlic, artichokes and olives (sparate containers), one half an avocado and a half tomato, a giant slab of salmon, freshly picked dill, my mom's "special" tom and jerry mix (bleck), yeast, buttermilk powder, various salad fixins and giant bag of organic baby carrots my husband bought thinking he would get a carrot cake made from it if he let it sit there long enough. So far no cake. we are at cake detente. Oh yeah - wine and sangria fixins. I am on a sangria kick. My husband is bothered my my jar of various muddlings. And the usual condiments.

I was going to abbreviate the list, but realized I'd never really done an inventory so just bloviated the list here. Then I pasted it into Google (who knows, maybe it would come up with some recipe links) and got a 'server error' I'd never seen with Google before.

I do advocate the second-fridge idea, although it can raise energy costs notably if the second fridge is really the old, inefficient fridge that got replaced in the ktichen. I think you can make up for it by storing discount reindeer steaks in the freezer section though.

                                                                                                          - Vegetables / Herbs: 1 green pepper, vidalia onions, red onions, dill, basil, celery (needs to be used soon!), hothouse cucumber, 1 head broccoli, 2 ears corn, 2 heads of romaine (on sale... i have to figure out how to eat all this romaine!! lots of lettuce wraps?), 1 box of arugula mix, jar of roasted red and yellow peppers, turnips

                                                                                                          - Fruit: cherries, grapes, strawberries, half a cantaloupe

                                                                                                          - Beverages: milk (whole, 1%), half bottle of wine (kind of crappy and probably will turn into sangria), red jacket orchards apple cider, water, purple grape juice, ginger ale, xiao xing rice wine ("beverage" is loosely used in this case... i use it for cooking)

                                                                                                          - Condiments: lime pickles, sabra s'chug hot red pepper mix, chinese barbecue sauce, satay sauce, soy sauce (now in the fridge instead of cabinet because of caroline's thread on the subject), santa barbara roasted garlic salsa, ketchup, brown mustard, mayonnaise (hain safflower... it's cheap and good), mint chutney, tamarind

                                                                                                          - Miscellaneous: yogurt (whole, homemade); olives (picholines + fat, ripe black olives I don't remember the name for); capers; cough medicine; condiments from recent takeout (various chutneys, aji, mojo)

                                                                                                          ** Freezer **

I always have a cheese board working in my fridge, which has a covered pantry shelf and I've got upwards of nine cheeses working! And I'm lactose intolerant! Go figure! I can never pass up a good stinky cheese!

Plus there's the parm-reg, the Mexican cheese, soft mozz, Boursin, cheeses we brought from Amsterdam and Germany, Maytag blue, Old Amsterdam cheese, gorgonzola.....probably more than 15! And we're not lactose-intolerant.

Haven't cooked with it, but we like it on toast and rolls. Can't keep butter at room temp here. Have a butter bell that I use for regular butter sometimes.
