What is in your refrigerator right now?
Quick, think fast: what is in your refrigerator right now? I know it's nosy, but besides the usual eggs & milk, what different things do you have in cold storage that you either have plans for or not? Sort into the following categories....
Seasonal:
I have 1/2 a cantaloupe
an avocado
1/2 head of iceberg, 1/2 head of romaine, wild arugula
wild onions, parsley, basil
Leftovers:
3/4 Rotisserie chicken
peach & watermelon fruit salad
Biscuit shortcakes
hard boiled eggs, cooked bacon
wilted greens
New:
Bob's Big Boy Roquefort Dressing
Bear Pit BBQ sauce
Waiting...:
Mozzarella bocconcini
pancetta cubetti
chicken thighs in a buttermilk-herb marinade
camembert
super-lump crabmeat
Cant wait to go to the Farmer's Market tomorrow in Santa Monica, and get some more peaches, berries, tomatoes, greens and herbs. My fridge is actually quite bare, than the way it usually looks! Can I peek into your fridge?

2 gallons of milk, open (one fine, one probably needs to be chucked)
1/2 gallon whole buttermilk (prolly also dead)
leftover crappy beer (Busch light, Old Milwaukee, one lone can of PBR that was found outside and is surely skunky) - from a party this weekend
a huge almost empty jug of white zin - ditto
blue Gatorade
orange Gatorade
heavy cream
diet peach tea
huge flour tortillas
a package of Keebler Fudge Stripes which I'm sure only has 2 in it
I think there is a similar package of Vienna Fingers unless my husband ate them (no clue why he keeps them in the fridge)
eggs - 18 pack, but not full
dry sherry
leftover braised lemon chicken - some sauce and pickings, plus one whole piece that got left on the counter overnight and will probably have to be pitched
leftover Southern-style green beans
leftover steak
leftover mashed sweet potatoes
sour cream
huge jar of Mt. Olive dill pickles with 2 left
huge jar of Claussen dill spears
bacon
celery
bag o salad
parsley
organic dill that was bought & not used & probably bad
cherries (OK, I'm actually eating these right now)
a small container of lemon juice
probably Sriracha
definitely a small jar of chili-garlic sauce (the one that has seeds)
Jack Daniels BBQ sauce (this stuff is foul)
dijon mustard
yellow mustard
spicy brown mustard
mayo
ketchup
pickled jalapenos
Claussen sandwich slices
Kraft shredded mozz, 5-cheese Italian, and 4-cheese Mexican (sale) plus I think another open package of mozz
sliced Sorrento cheese - colby jack and chedder
some sliced deli Sara Lee provolone - this is horrid and there is at least 1/2 lb left, but it's still there because my daughter says she'll eat it
bottled salad dressing - at least 3, including the Ranch that is the reason the dill is going bad
bacon bitsHad to cheat and look:
butter (always in there - can't believe I forgot)
small square of Cabot extra sharp cheddar
yes, there is sriracha
Kalamata olives
Polaner strawberry preserves
Bonne Maman blueberry preserves (can't believe I forgot I bought this! - it was refrigerated unopened)
sweet relish
Swanson organic chicken broth
2 leftover chicken wings
A1
Frank's red hot
hoisin sauce
small bottle of water
bread (not homemade)
4 pork chops
sour cream
Land O Frost sliced turkey

re: cookieluvntasha
Four dozen eggs? I thought I was bad buying a dozen & a half! Do you ever use them all or are they in rotation?!
And fwiw, you don't need to refrigerate your shallots. They keep fine with the onion & potatoes in the dark dry pantry.
And don't feel bad - I too am a little obsessive, bordering hoardish, by having 2 stocked pantries at all times! Hey, in CA, we never know when disaster may strike - literally!

I also have assorted fruit that I keep collecting from the market, it just looks so good. I have to make a fruit salad.
I have half a roast pork loin, that was absolutely heavenly, made the house smell like rosemary & garlic when I made it. And two prime rib eyes, that I must use up tonight. Deciding between a steak chili with cornbread, or just slicing the steak into some blue cheese spaghetti....
I have a pound of ground beef for cheeseburgers for lunch for the boys tomorrow. A ton of cheese, as usual, including but not limited to cheddars, cotija, mozzarella in a few different forms, gruyere, parmeggiano wedge, the list goes on..
Also still have some fresh mushrooms, two ears of sweet corn, 2 overripe avocados, and lots of romaine & iceberg. I think I have my work cut out for me over the next few days!!

re: fistalee
I think you're one of only a small handful on this list who have fessed up to something on the order of 'moldy chipotle pepper' and 'rotten eggs' - be careful with those chicken breasts. I suppose this will spawn a 'high meat' discussion now.
There is a strategy of shopping for things that don't spoil easily... you've got it started there with the capers and soy sauce and olives. Might be worth expanding on. It's one of several themes I keep working on.
-
re: Cinnamon
You're right, Cinnamon, there's an art to hoarding so as not to have rotting food! With two full refrigerators, freezers and pantries, I believe I have achieved it! It involves a lot of rotation and discipline!!
I didn't think chipotles got moldy, I've had mine in the fridge so long, and have still used them! But yes, I think you need to get rid of the chicken, fistalee. Just let it go!

re: crabby_cakes
Well, I mean, waiting for some inspiration to do something with it, like an impulse purchase or one of your standard staples for a recipe you're making later on.
For example, I have some super lump pasteurized crabmeat that expires this summer, so it's waiting for me to make crab cakes or a seafood bake or a salad for cucumber cups. That was an impulse purchase, but I knew it had a long shelf life so I can play with it.
I also have some pancetta cubetti that I tend to use in a spaghetti carbonnara dish but I can also use in a salad, frittata or risotto. It's a staple - I usually pick it up when I see it at TJs, but it's waiting for me to decide.

So it looks like many of us are condiment heavy! Which is good thing in my opinion! I hadn't even bothered listing mine - there are so many! Some of you keep things in the fridge that I don't like hot sauces & soy sauce, worcestershire. Those are in the pantry.
I'm also lucky b/c I have a full second fridge & freezer in the garage. It was original to the house, not very old, but kept freezing my produce & eggs. So we replaced it w/ an armoir style amana and put the side by side outside. That's where most of the meat storage is, and a full wine & beer, sodas & waters, yogurts & extra cheese & lunchmeats for the kids are stored. That leaves the main fridge free to put in large dishes when prepping for a party.

re: Phurstluv
jumping jehosepha, you have *three* refrigerators?! me and my small brain would never be able to remember what was in them all. i would need a card catalogue or book of reference to keep track. as it is, we have three bottles of the same mustard because we kept forgetting that we already have some and bought more every time we had a barbecue!
-
-
re: Phurstluv
I do, too. The one in the garage holds my dh's beers as well as all the different flours that I use for baking and overstock juice boxes and milk and, when I make it, the sourdough starter.
And Phurstluv! Did you go to that booth at the Sta. Monica Farmer's Market and buy up all the onion sprouts!!?? You cecotrope! Leave some for me next time!
Now I'll have to make ice cream with all these avocados. (Which isn't bad, except that no one in my family likes avocado ice cream except me, so I have to eat it all, then pull out the fat clothes).
And don't recommend guacamole; I ALWAYS have guacamole.-
-
-
re: Phurstluv
If you like onions, you'll like the onion sprouts. To clean, run a handful under the faucet, then gently squeeze out excess water, place in paper towel and pat until sufficiently dry.
As for the avos, salads it is. Bought pinkertons, haas, fuertes, and gwens, and will treat the family to a taste test tonight.
By the way, go by the Carlsbad seafood booth and have a fresh-shucked, ice-cold oyster. Wonderful!-
-
re: Phurstluv
My husband and I ALWAYS eat some just-shucked oysters from them, and when we can ever remember to pack a small igloo with ice, I'm planning 2 lbs. of clams for linguine with fresh clam sauce.
We just never remember the igloo 'til we get there. Will put a post-it-note on the door right now.-
re: Michelly
Good idea. Love the linguine w/clam sauce idea. I can't get my DH to eat much seafood, so I'd have to stick w/fish. Will definitely check them out tomorrow.
Will be getting more peaches, too. The last batch was pretty bruised up and did not last the week. The strawberries from the place on 2nd, near the sprouts, are still amazingly sweet, a week later, in the fridge.

re: Phurstluv
Me too. We moved the fridge that came with the house downstairs plus bought a small chest freezer. We bought a three-door/frreezer on the bottom s.s. fridge for the kitchen, which I love. I keep dark spices, beer and wine, not-often-used condiments and jellies and such downstairs, and use it when we entertain down there (downstairs is a huge open great room off the outdoor "kitchen"). Very useful.

A GIANT bowl of greens (still sorta dirty) from the garden, radishes, fresh hen eggs, homemade yogurt, some shriveled up ginger root, cut lemons, lemon cake, hummus, a giant container of costco garlic, artichokes and olives (sparate containers), one half an avocado and a half tomato, a giant slab of salmon, freshly picked dill, my mom's "special" tom and jerry mix (bleck), yeast, buttermilk powder, various salad fixins and giant bag of organic baby carrots my husband bought thinking he would get a carrot cake made from it if he let it sit there long enough. So far no cake. we are at cake detente. Oh yeah - wine and sangria fixins. I am on a sangria kick. My husband is bothered my my jar of various muddlings. And the usual condiments.

re: cimui
Still learning, but I know what I like. :) Now to figure out how to translate that into actually having good-food snacks available at a moment's notice. Right now just making use of the fresh items in a timely manner is keeping me busy. But I am learning more about what keeps well so is good to have on hand, vs. what is best to buy day-of.

re: Cinnamon
your fridge broke Google!
inventory of my whirlpool would scare me. i forgot all the condiments, the jelly, the nutella, the fish sauce, black bean sauce, rooster sauce, mustards, just- so much.we are getting another fridge for the garage- it's just too cramped in there at holiday time, drives ya nutty.
-
re: Boccone Dolce
The inventory of my whirlpool would probably include several socks. I do advocate the second-fridge idea, although it can raise energy costs notably if the second fridge is really the old, inefficient fridge that got replaced in the ktichen. I think you can make up for it by storing discount reindeer steaks in the freezer section though.

re: Shrinkrap
Interesting "photo essay" on refrigerators, and a major confirmation that refrigerators should NOT have glass doors! It spurred me to go look in my own refrigerator. <sigh> I am now convinced that once a refrigerators leaves a showroom floor, it never again has a pretty interior. No way I'm telling you guys what's in mine! '-)
