Insieme serves terrific Italian. Somehow, I think your husband's preference will fall somewhere in their traditional or contemporary menu. The chef/owner Marco Canora successfuly strived to bring great ingredient-based Italian to his NYC restaurants. It's along 7th Ave. near 50/51 Street.

Insieme has a nice price fixe menu at the moment at $35. Otherwise it runs on the expensive side.

Roberto Passon is very good as well. Moderately priced.

Maria Pia has a good value prix fixe. Food is not as good as the above two places though.

Trattoria Trecolori, on 47th, b/t B'way & 8th, is a favorite of mine and many other Hounds.

Excellent quality, popular pre-theatre destination, menu may be a little bit "out there" for a non-foodie, though. Also, it's pricey.
