Yesterday (June 1, 09) I went to Longo's, Bayview and York Mills. What a disappointment. I knew that grocery shopping on mondays is not the best time of the week. I was mostly interested in their organic veggies and I had been attracted by their weekly specials. The veggies were limp; the asparagus roots were not even soaking in water; no green chards and nothing really attractive. At the meat dpt , nothing looked fresh and shiny, and $4 for 2 thin ready-made burgers was too much for what was offered. I have to say that there are lots of counters, lots of selections, but may be Mondays are not the days were I should be shopping there. I might try another day...

I haven't been to that location but the ones I frequent (Bayview/John or Woodbine/Hwy 7) are excellent. Slight edge to the Bayview/John location as that has more specialty items to cater to the Jewish clientele.

I bought Ontario asparagus last week for $1.49/lb, and the stems were soaking in water. They also have Ontario pork rib end chops for the same price, the sale ends Thursday.

I see store-to-store variation in their Mississauga/Brampton operations. There's apparently less of the old family and family friends overseeing operations than before, when they fussed the details and kicked butt among staff to keep things running right. I've picked up off pork from their Brampton location and have found earwigs in the olives--seriously. Their other stores in Mississauga are just fine. Today's cheapskate mood probably isn't helping them since, aside from produce, they're over-priced on many items.

I shop the York Mills Leslie Longos on a regular basis.
Don't really like Metro, or Loblaws.
Their meat selection is better than most, and I can always have more choice than supermarkets, including Sweetbreads, Duck Breast, etc.
I can find most of my grocery needs there, and the shelves are usually stacked.
I don't buy much fish as I prefer to go to Dianas where the quality is better.
I don't know if they are more on Household products, as I make a monthly trek to Costco.
Their fruit and vegetable selection has improved since they opened, and usually is fine.

I agree. I drive a couple km out of my way to buy my produce at Longo's if I have a lot of produce on my list, rather than buying produce at the Metros and Loblaws north of Eglinton/west of Leslie/east of Avenue Rd/south of Sheppard.

Their produce prices also tend to be lower, even though the product has usually looked better. My only problem with that Longo's is the parking lot-one of the most annoying parking lots in the city, especially the closer one gets to Longo's. Always full, and very difficult to come and go.

Worst parking lot. Ever. But I agree about the produce -- way better than Metro. The produce at the Yonge/Yonge Blvd. is usually ok. But I go to Longo's whenever I need more "exotic" produce. I can almost always count on Longo's having what I'm looking for.

The parking and general traffic around Leslie and York Mills keep me away from Longo's. I'm coming from further east, and prefer a combination of shopping at Highland Farms, T&T Milliken, and /or Costco. Diana's and P.A.T. are often in the loop.

I might venture over to Longo's for Jewish specialties, but last time I looked for Baldwin St, hot dogs, they didn't have any.

agreed on the parking lot being a disaster. I was in there some time ago trying to make my way from Longo's across the plaza to the exit at Leslie and my van (with me in it, mind!) was sideswiped by an Impatient Shopper driving a large vehicle who didn't bother to stop or slow down.
I don't go in there unless I positively, absolutely have to.

So, this reminds me why I haven't been to that Longo's for a while, even though every time I went to Loblaw's I thought I should have gone to Longo's instead. The parking at the York Mills/Leslie location is a nightmare, even for a woman without a stroller!

I shop here and there at three different Longo's locations (York Mills, Hwy 7, John) when my schedule allows it, and I like the Hwy 7 location better. They seem to carry a better selection for my needs (deli, cheese etc.), and I remember getting some really good service there. Oh, and for good produce, you can try asking the staff which day of the week the stock comes in. I asked before but forgot which day it was.

I agree with the other readers, your description was more appropriate of a Metro/Dominion store then a Longo's. The Leslie/York Mills location may not be the best store of the chain but I still find it better then the competition. I used to shop at the 2 Longo's in Mississauga but now that I'm downtown the uptown is the closes one. I can't wait for one in the downtown core. I know they're planning on opening one next to the ACC and I hope it will be full service and not a Longo's Express.

The Longo's at Maple Leaf Square (next to the ACC) will be a full size (40,000 sq.ft.) full service store. Unfortunately, I don't think that it will be opening before October 2010.

There are two new Longo's Express (or whatever they are calling it) in the City. One is on Dundas just east of Bay (south side at Elizabeth, I think) and the other is on Bloor Street, one block east of Yonge at Park Road. Not sure if either are open yet though.

This has happened to me only once at this Longo's, at York Mills/Leslie....and I've been going there since it opened. I don't know what was wrong that day...it was pretty early in the morning, so maybe they just hadn't gotten their groove on, but I think I left because it was so bad. Limp produce frustrates me, what can I say?

But this is my regular grocery store and many many times also carries much of what Pusateri's carries in terms of produce, maybe Pusateri's is slightly better, larger, but also more $$$$, so you weigh what it's worth to you. I love the older Italian produce guy that's there though....he's like a fruit pusher, it's fantastic! He always wants you to try the fruit and he's also very knowledgeable about the produce. But I cannot wait for McEwan's to open up because Pusateri's will never if rarely ever see me again! Can't stand what it's become, and talk about parking problems. They could have expanded their parking, but got greedy and wanted garden centre instead!
