we won a dolce gusto machine - now what??? (moved from ontario)

hi chowhounders,

hubby won a dolce gusto machine @ a company golf tournament last week ... http://www.dolce-gusto.ca

we enjoy coffee etc. but would never have bought something like this for ourselves. does anyone else have this machine or something like it? (i.e. those machines that use packets of coffee/cream to make cappucinos, etc.) any thoughts/feedback regarding your experience?

it's brand new, in it's original packaging ... we're not sure if we're going to keep it or give it away ...

tks!

    1. I would sell it, as I don't need a lot of coffee and variations for a number of people, at a fairly high cost per cup. It might be one more counter gadget with initial appeal and garage sale potential.

        1. Hi, I really want a Dolce Gusto, but can't afford the high price. Would you consider selling to me at a reasonable price? You would make one girl very happy if you say "yes";)

              where are you located?

              • The machine is AWESOME. If you enjoy cappuccino (makes both hot and iced) and lattes and espresso do NOT give this machine away. They are better than any coffee shop one I have tasted and you can have them in an instant. The milk in the capsules is powered but it tastes like fresh when brewed. Very easy to use and to maintain. Also awesome hot chocolate and mocha drinks. Just read the rave reviews of it on Amazon. Amazon has sales from time to time on the capsules, and you can also get them for less on Ebay.

                    hi blondelle,

wow - okay. that's interesting! to be honest, i hadn't really thought about how this machine works ... more like "where the heck am i going to put it???" DH is leaning towards keeping it ... but i told him he has to find a spot for it first! :)

                    tks!

It's not very large and it's quite a striking design. You can put it anywhere you have an outlet. Doesn't have to be in the kitchen. I have mine on my desk.

all due respect, but no capsule machine makes real espresso.

It might not be real espresso but it's REAL good? Just about as good as that from a Nespresso machine which is pretty darn good. The only way to get better is to grind your own beans, load the machine, tamp it down, and then dispose of the mess and clean the machine. The difference isn't worth all that trouble to me.

                                1. re: blondelle

true that, it's all about making tradeoffs. I can say from experience that making real espresso at home is messy and time consuming and if you're not into the "ritual" and just want something espresso-like, which would seem to apply to most people, it's just not worth the trouble. Also it's not cheap, as you'd have to invest in a quality burr grinder that can cost as much as the machine. However, the difference in the result is substantial and I would contend more like what I can get in a good coffee shop (for the record, I don't consider Starbucks, dunkin donuts or McDonalds good coffee). As they say, once you've gone black, you'll never go back. That said, if you're happy with the results from a capsule, more power to you.
