Don't know anything about the area, but will be attending a conference at Rhodes next week. Any place nearby (walking distance) that's good to eat? Thanks.

The only two restaurants in reasonable walking distance from Rhodes are Cafe Eclectic and Dino's...both are one block west on McLean. I like Cafe Eclectic. Good breakfast/bakery and sandwiches for lunch. I've never been to Dino's (italian) but it gets good reviews.

I wouldn't recommend Dino's. My husband and I have tried it twice in the last year and the food is really lacking. Cafe Eclectic is better and you can sit out on the front sidewalk at their bistro tables and enjoy your meal (assuming it's not hot and sticky)!

I love the ravioli at Dino's. Everything else is just ok.

For both drinks and really good food, go to The Cove. It's on Broad. There' s a pizza place too. It won't be too much of a walk. If you want wings, there's a really good place at Summer and Parkway. It's right beside the Exxon.

Agree that the Cove has good food and probably the best drinks in Midtown. However, I personally wouldn't recommend someone from out of town who doesn't know Memphis walk from Rhodes to the Cove. I bike on Broad at night and all over Midtown, so I'm not a "scared suburbanite", but that's not a wise choice in my opinion. Broadway Pizza is average at best.

Many thanks to both of you for your helpful suggestions -- food and walkwise. I appreciate your help

There are tons of good places in Midtown that are a very short drive.

Restaurant Iris- Chef just named 2009 Best New Chef by Food & Wine
Fino's - lunch only, great sandwiches
Noodle Doodle Do - noodles and sushi
Tsunami - best seafood in town
            Bari - regional Italian (Puglia)
            Alex's - hot wings and a beer
            Pho Saigon - Vietnamese
Cafe 1912- relaxed bistro with great food
Paulette's - old school French fine dining
Cupboard - meat & 3, breakfast and fried chicken

Many thanks, but I'm not driving -- but maybe I'll meet someone who is!

Thanks for the recs -- I really enjoyed Eclectic Cafe -- at least twice! Also ate well at McEwens Encore and the Rendezvous -- my expectations were not high for the ribs there given the opinion on the board. But we had an excellent meal there I am happy to report

I've noticed that a lot of native Memphis folks don't like the Rendezvous, but when they are on, those ribs are really really good.

There have been a lot of people over the years who came to Memphis just to try their ribs- I don't know how many have gone away disappointed, but I'll bet the percentage is pretty low.
