Does anyone know of a restaurant in L.A. that serves deep fried Snickers and other snack foods? I've got to try 'em - the curiosity is killing me. Thanks.

I think you have to wait for one of the fairs, either OC or LA county. That's where you can find all sorts of things that will damage your digestive track, your central nervous system and your waist line. (g)

I do recall Tyler Florance, (I think it was) doing these on one of his shows, so you can probably go to foodnetwork.tv and find the recipe.

I don't think you'll find this in a restaurant. It's most likely a fair (as in county fair or state fair) food or street vendor food. As this is county fair season, you may want to try one of the county fairs.

The batters for the oreos are generally made from flour, eggs, and vinegar, with no added sugar because the oreos are sweet enough and need the balance. I've seen one recipe that used beer and one that used club soda...

Having worked the company that makes the key ingredient in most deep fried candy bars, I just had to try them and the Oreos at Sunset Junction as well... I loved the Oreos the best... And they are indeed... HEAVEN...

Like described, the batter is light and they are basically fried VERY quickly... BUT, the heat and oil seep through the cookie... so the cookie inside gets warm and melty...

They served it with a sprinkling of Powdered Sugar to make it all pretty and, I'd totally do it again... calories be damned!

And LuLu's Alibi does serve the deep fried Twinkies.

my favorite idea for deep frying comes from the ChipShop in Brooklyn - they deep fry Atkins bars! Brilliant.

Anything like this to be had in LA? It would surely enhance the flavor of those things :)

That would be a moot point. The carbs in the batter would cancel out the benefit of the low carb bar. Hmmm... interesting.

ChipShop will also add extra sugar to this concoction to really cancel out the low-carbness. It is just somebody's notion of being perverse, I suppose.

(Un)Luckily i am going back to visit next week and may attempt to at least photograph the beast.

Maybe it's the weather in the northern part of the British isles but I seem to read about an inordinately high number of intensely calorific (not to mention heart-stopping) foods coming from there - like a chip sandwich that is basically filled with fries - ie carbs and carbs??!! Also remember reading James Heriott in my youth and he talked about Yorkshire farmers who would breakfast on pure fat (admittedly this was about a hundred years ago). Elvis would have loved it.

You might try:

Robin Hood British Pub

13640 Burbank Blvd
Sherman Oaks, CA 91401-5216
Phone: (818) 994-6045

I haven't been, so I can't say if they deep fry any candy bars, but I'll go and report back!

Btw, it's the venerable and reliable Jerome's favorite for Fish and Chips, so it can't be bad.
