Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the South

date help tonight - richmond

looking to go out somewhere new and fun with my picky hubby.

i know reviews have been mixed on si tapas but was considering it because tapas is just inherently fun. also considering twenty seven and kitchen 64 (i've only been there for brunch). delux? rowland? still have never been to millies but there's not a lot he eats there. don't think he'd eat anything at six burner or black sheep unfortunately. (essentially he eats no veggies).

have liked dd33, eurasia, sensi, comfort, lulus, patina, and been to a bunch of places that were ok. doesn't have to be fancy! fun bar food is cool with us. more about having fun than anything else.

opinions? thanks!!!!

    1. There are a number of dishes I liked at Si - the goat cheese stuffed peppers and the lamb meatballs were both memorable. I don't think I had anything that was unpleasant, mostly I just wanted more choices. Haven't tried twenty seven. Kitchen 64 is fun and laid back...everything I've had there would probably classify as great, less-greasy-than-normal bar food (love the nachos). I went to DeLux once and hated the risotto I ordered. Haven't been brave enough to try again. I haven't tried Rowland yet, but I've heard good things. Have you thought of Cafe Gutenburg? I havent' been since they reopened, but it sounds promising (I'm trying it next week). I always think Cous Cous is fun. Other favorites of mine are Mom's Siam, Mezzanine, Barrel Theif (light fare like paninis), Mekong, and Edo's Squid.

        1. I wouldn't go to Rowland. Last meal we had there was awful and I think the menu could be a challenge to your Dh. How about CanCan? They have a kickass cheeseburger and fries and the bar is great. Another place to consider would be Acacia and of course Edo's. Mekong is great but may be too Vietnamese for your Dh. I think Mezzanine is terribly overrated.

I forgot that we've already loved acacia and had okay meals at edo's and cancan. actually my husband's was pretty awful at cancan the last time but we like the atmosphere so we keep going back. i definitely think french onion soup and cheeseburgers are the way to go there - their mac n cheese is good too. we are close to barrel thief so show up at the short pump one fairly often for drinks and apps or desserts.

anyway we ended up at delux. nice bar atmosphere. liked the tables for two with the high backed chairs. a comfy place to sit and talk and even people watch some. still happy hour when we got there so half price wine and turned into $5 wine thursday. i had an argentinian malbec. not the best i'd ever had or anything but nice. certainly at those prices. mainly did appetizers and they were hit and miss.
the delux homemade chips with blue cheese/ranch were again not the best version of them i've ever had but yummy and a good deal at 3.95. the dressings were all fresh tasting. i throughout the night tried ranch, blue cheese, and balsamic. the wings were AWFUL!!! sweet/hot glaze i just hated. the salad was fine but came with 2 past their prime looking cucumbers on it that they really needed to have looked at and have left off the plate. the kobe sliders were really good. you could really taste the meat and the tomato chutney and pickles paired perfectly with them. i would definitely do these and the chips again. my hubby got the lobster mac & cheese. it wasn't BAD it just wasn't good. certainly not good enough to be worth the calories. the truffle of the day was acai berry and it was an interesting dessert. 4 super rich chocolate truffles with a hint of acai. pretty good. WAY more than i could eat and a nice hint of sweet. would be great to share. and at only $5.... i have to say i was conscious of the value here. it was UP and down. all over the board. but if you lived close by or were meeting people, the atmosphere was cute and i think they do some things well.
the chips and kobe sliders and the wine specials and the truffles (oh and their coffee was good) and you'd have a really great meal 2 people could share for $30 in a nice spot.

oh and then back to rare old times. and while the band should have stuck to the irish tunes they were playing in the beginning and i can't figure out how it can legally still be SO smokey in there. i still love that bar.
