My Pre-NOWFE Eating Report (Day 2)

Today is a very special day for me!!! I am being fed by my two favorite Sue's!! Today Spicer and tonight Zemanick. YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Day 2 Lunch - BAYONA
I love lunch at Bayona. I have had and enjoyed dinner there several times but I just adore Saturday lunch there! Not only is it a great deal (3 plates for $25) but for some reason to me there is something almost magical about that little courtyard. They did not have the courtyard open today but that's ok. A little champagne to start will make it all better. I started with the Cream of Asparagus soup and it was good but my husbands Cream of Garlic Soup was phenomenal - but you must LOVE garlic!!!!
Next I had an Indonesian Pork Sate with rice noodles, peanut sauce and a pineapple sambal. I was expecting more of a "constructed" dish but it was served almost like a stirfry. The pork and pineapple in it were excellent but overall not one of my favorites. I liked the thought behind it but the words "Indonesian" and "Sambal" in the dishes description led me to believe this dish would have at least a bit of heat and it did not.
Lastly I had the Crawfish Quesadilla with corn relish and avocado. Divine!!! The flavors in this dish were just beautifully married. The crawfish were so plump and fresh and the salsa was just great. I also had a nice hunk of my husbands Smoked duck with peanut butter and pepper jelly in a puff pastry. Always, always divine!! Once again, a great Sat. lunch at Bayona.

Day 2 Dinner - GAUTREAU'S
Let me preface this by apologizing for the pics on this one as they are a bit blurry. Actually, I can only attach 4 photos, so most will be Bayona. My pics would not do justice to this meal anyways. I was so enamored I forgot to take notes so I will just tell you what I had and tell you it was all SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!! Take my advice - Book now and eat there - you will not regret it. See if you can have Louis as your server - we love him.
Sue sent out a lovely starter for us. (It helps that we have followed our waiter Louis around from Scottsdale, AZ, to Emerils to Gautreau's and Lilette) Great bacon wrapped shrimp with a pistou (I think) and aged balsamic (I think) around the plate. See pic.
Next I had the duck confit with pickled beets. Oh God it was good. The confit was amazing but those pickled beets were the best pickled anything I have had anywhere. My husband really enjoyed his sweetbreads as well. I can't tell you about them as I did not have any.
Next I had her Roasted chicken. I love this chicken more than the chicken at Zuni in SF - and I love that chicken.
We topped it off with a Strawberry "shortcake". Shortcake purists would not be pleased. You are given complete disclosure that this is not a typical shortcake. I LOVED it!!!!!!!!!! It was a steamed cake - it was like a gingerbread - and topped with wonderful sweet macerated strawberries and whipped cream. IMHO the most inventive spin I have seen on a classic dessert in a LONG time. It was like a strawberry version of a black forest cake (kinda).
Just the most perfect way to end the day!!!
What a huge amount of talent in a wisp of a girl and she is just the nicest person ever. She walked outside to say goodbye to us and to thank us for coming. She is a class act.

Again, my apologies about not listing wines. Suffice it to say we had wine(s) and they were great.
Tomorrow we are off to Patois and Upperline......

    1. Another mouthwatering report!

      Bayona is our favorite place for lunch in the Quarter. My husband & I have eaten there many times & have tried a variety of dishes, & have never been disappointed. We bought Susan's new cookbook... now if only!

      Have yet to try Gautreau's, but it's on the 'To Do' list.
