Andy's Orchards, Morgan Hill - early Brooks cherries

Andy's Orchards in Morgan Hill has started harvesting their earliest local cherry variety - Brooks. I like this largish, light red cherry for its crispness and balance between sweetness and tartness. It's expensive, though - $6.75 for a pint. I don't care; I spend money on top quality fruit and avoid sugary desserts that way.

They're carrying a couple of other varieties, too, but I was told that these aren't harvested in their orchards. I assume they're coming from the Central Valley. They've one apricot already, as well, though I didn't try those.

If you plan to visit Andy's for any of their stone fruits, I'm attaching a link to their harvest calendar. I'm going to attend to it religiously, because the dear Redgold nectarines are only in season for a couple of weeks, and I'm doggoned if I'm going to miss out on them and have to wait for another year.

Andy's is at 1615 Half Rd Morgan Hill, CA 95037 - (408) 782-7600.
