We are headed to Martha's Vineyard in October for their Food and Wine Festival (16-18) Can anyone please let me know if you have been to any of the past festivals?
We want to make sure we get the most out of our stay it and ensure not to miss anything that hounds consider a MUST on the Vineyard. Of course we have no clue where we are staying yet...so info there would help too.!
For lodging, we like the Hob Knob best. The Colonial Inn is a bit more central, but more bustling. The Winnetu, on South Beach is a bit out of the way, while the Clarion is the value play. The Harborview is also nice but seems to be in a state of flux right now (their huge renovation is on hold).
In the past most of the events were held right on or near the dock area.,but Edgartown has the most "fine dining" establishments on the island. Our favorites are Atria, L'Etoile (both expensive), Lattanzi's Pizza, The Grill on Main (both more moderate), The Newes From America Pub, David Ryan's (eat downstairs), both of which are reasonable by MVI standards. Among the Flowers Cafe for breakfast. There are other really good places in Edgartown that others, no doubt will fill you in on. If you want to try other towns, let us know.
Sounds like Balance is now a memory......The rumors here are that it's now going to be an Irish Pub. Everything is always changing on the Vineyard and every year is a new adventure. It's a very unusual place to have a thriving business with a short summer season and a very long winter with few visitors.
Oak Bluffs is a lot of fun- very different atmosphere. Edgartown is a classic New England whaling town and Oak Bluffs is really an eclectic mix of everything. Very energetic. As far as staying in one town or another, if you plan on being 100% committed to the Food Festival, you might prefer being in Edgartown, but if you want to see other parts of the island and just get a break from the Festival, you'd enjoy being in Oak Bluffs. The Food Festival does not include all of the island restaurants by any means, and is geared to a particular audience. Depends on what you are looking for on your island visit.
If you want some details, keep checking back, as more and more people will post about the Vineyard now that the summer is starting. We are heading to the new location of Mediterranean this weekend which has been a favorite for years in its old location. Will report back on that.
