So my husband and I are heading in from the burbs tomorrow to go to the ASP production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Hibernia Hall in Roxbury. I'm racking my brain for places to eat...we used to live in JP, so we have some familiarity. We're not looking to spend a lot of money (Ten Tables would be too much) or go to the South End. We were considering Zon's or maybe Doyle's (for nostalgia and beer, not really the food), but is there anything new we should consider? Or places people love we might not have been to? Bella Luna is off the list (I ate way too much there when I lived nearby)...I'd appreciate the help!

take a look at vee vee: http://www.veeveejp.com/

focus on fresh vegs, fish & shellfish, quality ingredients. can get kinda loud, as i recall, but so do most places these days. on centre st in jp, by the monument. probably where id' go, if it were me.

i'm not sure how much cheaper zon's is than ten tables, unless you go the burger route.

bella luna moved to the brewery, and they may have revamped their menu too, but i'm not sure.

pupusa guanaca up in hyde square is a great hole in the wall for salvadoran.

Merengue on Blue Hill Ave in Roxbury has extremely good Dominican food, and isn't too pricey. http://www.merenguerestaurant.com/

I was gonna wholeheartedly recommend Merengue as well. Not often discussed on Chowhound, but this place is a real gem. As I and Snoop can attest, don't forget to end your meal with a slice of their tres leches cake. It explodes milks in your mouth, like a milky xiao long bao. :)

For quality sit-down meals with fresh ingredients, wine service, and good bang for the buck (not too expensive or too cheap) my go-to places in JP are JP Seafood and Centre Street Cafe.

The new Bella Luna is worth checking out if even for its hip new digs. I think some of the most creative and reasonably priced food in JP these days is at Bon Savor (next to Ten Tables).
