Middle Eastern Meat Pies

Does anyone know where I can find really good Middle Eastern (Lebanese) meat and spinach pies? I am looking for more of a market than a sit down restaurant, and I prefer the Middle Eastern style to the Greek style of pies. I am open to the outer boroughs, but would prefer to stay in Manhattan. All recommendations are appreciated.

  1. I haven't seen fatayer with lamb AND spinach, but if you're willing to do one or the other, you can take away from several places in the city, among which Naya, Bereket and Zeytuna. Other than the latter and their associated Zeytinz, I can't think of any markets in Manhattan that would have the pies.

    1. Not sure if you're looking for both meat and spinach together or separately, but you may want to try Melange on 64th and 1st. It's this tiny Middle Eastern market - I've seen the Greek style spinach pies there, but I'm pretty sure they may also have some meat ones - maybe you can call in advance? I know they also have another store further up on 1st, around 68 or so.

      1. Bread & Olive, on 45th, between 5th and 6th, has them. The owner is Lebanese. Its a very informal spot. They do a good lunch business. You see what you want, point, and take it to go or eat in the small back room. They have a number of such kibbes. Meat, spinach, meat and spinach. In cigar shapes and in little triangles. Their mezze are pretty good too.

        1. The best in the City (5 boroughs) is Damascus on Atlantic Ave., Bkln. Ask on the OB board.

I've been to Damascus, and while the pies are good they just aren't as good as some that I have had in the past. I will check out Bread & Olive, but I may be best off making them myself (as I often do when I get the craving).

Would you post your recipe to the Homecooking Board?

Ditto on Damascus. Great authentic spinach and meat pies. This family run place has been there for 50+ years.
