Perilla - Three outstanding meals!

My SO and I have been to Perilla on three separate occasions (twice within the last week) and had truly memorable meals. Service is friendly and efficient.

Brunch this morning with the grandparents: Our meal began with complimentary passion fruit-chocolate muffins. These were delicious, although we couldn't really taste the passion fruit. They were nice and buttery, though. Not too heavy.

I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. The corned beef had the texture of pulled pork. I have high standards for corned beef hash -- any recs for best in the city?? -- but this was quite tasty. Served with a piece of toast, some mustard, and cornichon pickles.

My SO ordered the shrimp and grits.. this was far and away the best dish from brunch! The grits were creamy and buttery, the shrimp wasn't overcooked. All the flavors went really well together! There was also a deep fried egg.. yum. The grandparents both ordered the French omelet of the day. It was filled with ricotta, spinach, and mushrooms. I didn't try this, but they seemed to enjoy it.

Along with these we also ordered bacon and toast to share. The bacon was thick and smokey. I highly recommend ordering a side! The toast was served with a side of homemade cherry-grape preserves, a big hit with the grandparents. As if this wasn't enough, we splurged and ordered dessert. The rhubarb sorbet cake was delicious as always -- tastes like a gourmet pb&j! We also got an order of the vanilla scented doughnuts. They were filled with a key lime custard and served with a coconut shot on the side. I don't do coconut, but the doughnuts were really great! The key lime was refreshing and made the yeast doughnut seem less heavy.

Last week we tried their lamb belly (truly melt in your mouth amazing!), the almond crusted soft shell crab (a delightful Thai-influenced flavor), and the roasted duck breast (good, but not the best). They had a special strawberry shortcake dessert that evening which was quite good (though not as good as the rhubarb cake).

With all the variety NY has to offer, we don't frequently visit the same restaurant in such a short time period, but to quote my SO, this is easily becoming one of our favorite restaurants in the city! If you haven't been there, I highly suggest you give it a try!
