Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Zaragoza Tamales

Had one last night - they are delicious. Zaragoza grocery is on Ave. A btwn 13 and 14 st. They are not as jam-packed as they used to be, so it's easier to get a tasty pork tamale late, and nice to support a local mom and pop business. I prefer Mrs. Zaragoza's tamales to the tamale lady's, and they are easier to track down. But be prepared to shell out $2 instead of $1 per tamale!

  1. I'm with you. Their tamales are amazing. But the availability of the tamales is hit or miss. I've only been able to get them once out of my last three visits. Just hit or miss if they haven't sold out by mid-afternoon.

I was surprised I could get a couple at midnight. And now that things look a little quieter there, I'm motivated to help keep them in business. I generally get mine to go and steam them at home.

    2. If they're out of tamales, grab yourself a chile relleno. I had one a few months back around midnight and ate it in about 12 seconds while walking down the street - not easy with fork food. I'm sure I looked like a lunatic (or someone who hadn't eaten in days). Good stuff.

Those are the best kinds of discoveries, though!
