Though I've never been to Itzocan Bistro (Lexington & 101), I love their East Village place Itzocan Cafe--Mexican French fusion--essentially Mexican ingredients with French technique. The huitlacoche corn souffle cake is one of the great appetizers in NY. Perhaps others can report on whether the uptown branch matches up.
re: Peter Cherches
I've never been to the East Village location, but very much enjoy the food at Itzocan Bistro. A couple of other suggestions:
Ottomanelli's on 93rd or so & Lex - excellent burgers and waffle fries. Very reasonable.
Square Meal, 92nd & Madison - well prepared American food with some twists. You may bring your own wine for a two dollar fee.
Paola's - 92nd & Madison - Italian, v. good food, quite expensive.
Giovanna's - I've heard good things about this place, including the pizza, but haven't tried it yet. Lex. &100th.
El Paso Taqueria - two locations - Lex & 103rd, and 97th between Madison & Park - quite good Mexican food.
But, of all of these, I'd take the opportunity to go to Itzocan. www.itzocanbistro.com
