    1. I like César's version with Orange Caramel Sauce - there's a photo and recipe from them on Chow: http://www.chow.com/recipes/10082

      1. I have not tried it, but it is on the menu at Betty's Ocean View Diner. It fits with their persona, so I would expect it to be quite good.

          1. Bette's To Go in the Fourth St. complex in Berkeley does a classic version. I'm not sure they always have it, so call first.

The Jewish delicatessen, Saul's, makes a mean version of bread pudding. They use challah and big chunks of chocolate, doused in some heavy cream.

                • The funny thing is that Looney's Barbecue has very good bread pudding, made with sourdough, pecans and whiskey sauce. And it's only $5.50.

I love the bread pudding at Vanessa's Bistro in Berkeley, but probably you'd only be able to get in right after opening or right before closing if going for that only.

                      • it seems angeline on shattuck has it but at $7 a slice

                          1. re: mustardgirl

I am a huge fan of bread pudding, and the version at Angeline's is one of the best I've had. Totally decadent and probably too rich and too much for one person to eat alone...but totally worth it.

                            • Gregoire on Cedar and Shattuck has a different version of it every month...
