TX gulf seafood allergy?

stricken May 21, 2009 10:48 PM

Why do I break out in hives sometimes when I eat shellfish, but not all the time?
I always eat mussels, clams, calamari, scallops with no problem. I always eat soft shell crab and jumbo lump crab. Last week I had some Texas shrimp and broke out in hives. Last month I had jumbo lump crab from Mexico and broke out in hives. Could it be that I have a reaction to gulf seafood since the other seafood I eat comes from elsewhere? Is there such a thing?

I really hope someone can answer your question because the same thing happened to me. I had jumbo gulfshrimp fettucine in New Orleans and had an awful reaction. Haden't happened before and I had no clue what caused my reaction. I continued to eat all shellfish, mussles, clams, shrimp, lobster etc. Then I had Paella at a place in New York last week. It had mussles, clams, cuttlefish, shrimp, squid. Nothing I hadnt had before and once again I had an awful reaction. I just realized today when I started investigating that the shellfish was the common element between both reactions. But to your point, it doesn't happen all the time. Only twice in my life and now I am scared to eat shell fish!

Red tide perhaps? A sort of algae or little creature, I believe.
