Birthday Dinner for 4

With all the belt tightening everyone's compelled to do these days, the nicer meals out have come fewer and further in between this year. But doggone it, it's my birthday and I want to go somewhere new!

So, hounds, please help me get the best bang out of my buck. I love the following restaurants, but it's so easy to fall into the rut of going back to favorites:

-La Mar

I've been to the following in the last year but found them less compelling, either because of price or quality.

-Jack Falstaff
-Epic Roasthouse

Where should our little group of 4-6 head? I'd love to try something new. Off the top of my head, I have not yet been to:

  1. Jack Falstaff is off the list as they recently closed. Of the ones on the last part of the list I think I'd try SPQR which my wife loved as did a friend. My wife went with just one other person and my friend went alone and sat at the bar (which was great).

    1. You might want to consider Camino on Grand in Oakland. Also, if you have not tried it before, Dopo on Piedmont Avenue is very good and reasonably priced.

If you cross the bridge, you might consider Pican which has recently had some great Chowhound reviews. Check the place records. Camino has had VERY mixed reviews. It is no where on my list to try.

Gotta disagree with you on Camino rwo. Been a few times and it has been good to very very good (the house made sausages were fantastic and quite filling). Early reviews of Camino really slammed the small portion sizes but this has been corrected. The menu isn't large but changes every day so if something is there on a Wednesday it may wel not be on the menu Thursday.
