Lunch with California friends - Friday

  • 7

Looking for a good casual lunch spot for tomorrow afternoon. Would prefer Union Square - SoHo. Was thinking The Coffee Shop, but not sure.

THoughts?

Thank you!

  1. 71 Irving is nice - a little more coffee shop/ but a great place to hang out. Can get crowded though.

Also next door is Friend of a Farmer - great lunch choice as well.

Could go with Casa Mono - part of the Batali empire which has great tapas. There are a lot of great choices on Irving - just east of Union Square.

For sushi, Yama is a good choice as well.

A bit nicer - but great ambiance, especially if you sit outside is Blue Water Grill - part of the B.R. Guest Group.

Since they're Californians, I'd rule out sushi (great sushi out West).
I echo the rec for Balthazar, as it's a NYC/Soho institution.
I would also consider taking them for pizza/Italian...perhaps some other hounds can chime in for recs in your requested areas.

    2. How much are you looking to spend?

      1. I'm not a fan of Coffee Shop. Out of towners do love Balthazar though. That would be my choice.

I was thinking Balthazar, too, but that's why I asked how much UpperWest wants to pay.

THanks, all - hoping to hit Casa Mono. Yes, Balthazar is great, but my wife works across the street from it, and eats there at least twice a week!

            Have a great weekend, all!

Well... we actually did Coffee Shop and enjoyed ourselves. Had a nice booth, waitress paid attention to us and we lingered through the afternoon. Had the barbeque chicken sandwich - not bad! As for the crowd... your usual model wannabees, NYU students and then us..
