Thats a pretty broad question, and NC is a big state. In my opinion, the best bbq in NC is at Allen and Son, near Hillsborough (and I'm sure that will start a fight) but thats about 4 hours from Nebo. The great eastern NC bbq places are even further. Closer to your location is the town of Blowing Rock and the city of Asheville. You might want to search on here for those places and you'll find lots of suggestions. As a random suggestion, I offer Keaton's BBQ, which is famous for its is delicious bbq chicken. Its near Statesville, about an hour or so from Nebo.

Ditto Dawg. Asheville would be an amazing day trip and plan a stop in Black Mountain. The High Country (Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Boone) would be another full day. Asheville would be higher up on the chow scale with tons of great options and many threads on this board. The High Country has several nice restaurants and would also be a picturesque drive to see the higher elevations of North Carolina. Post back once you narrow it down.
