Galley Cafe - great breakfast diner in Newport

I'm not sure why I'm telling everyone about this place since I already think its too busy and its generally a locals secret place. I've been coming here forever (like since I was a kid) and for some reason I never thought to write about it, but when I was home a month or so ago, I was eating breakfast here with some friends and my gf and I thought maybe I should write about this place. It's at the end of a cul de sac in Harbor Island (a small all residential neighborhood) and behind it is the docks and the bay. There is absolutely zero chance you would find this place if you didn't already know about it.

It's a small cafe that looks like a 50s diner b/c I think it is like 50+ years old. Its got booths with white leather and a white countertops with small seats...ketchup bottles, cream/sugar for coffee, napkin holders etc...really the whole old school diner feel. The walls have tons of pics / paintings of Newport and boats.

Anything that is good straight American breakfast stuff is good here (some people like the burgers, but im not a fan). However, the real reason I come here is the chili cheese omelette. Its a square omelette filled with chili and american cheese...simple as it sounds, its so good. I also get some corned beef hash, which is really good too. Not much more to say about it than that, pretty self explantory. If you're on a diet, its probably not your best bet, but this place always hits the spot when I need some good breakfast food.

Highly recommend if you happen to be in Newport (fyi, if its brunch time on the weekend expect a wait)

Here's the address:
829 Harbor Island Dr
Newport Beach, CA 92660
(949) 673-4110

suggest googl'ing it b/c if you didn't grow up in or know newport really well, it's hard to find

Used to go with my Grandmother when I was a kid and I remember a good milkshake.
I think they used it a few times on the OC.

Thanks for posting. I gave that as a rec to someone here a couple months ago and got no reply. The chili cheese omelette is so yummy, especially on a Sunday morning with a hangover!
