best rooftop bar

I'm looking for a great rooftop bar for a night out with out of town friends. want them to get a great view of the city. i've been to the Thompson Hotel rooftop and it was nice, but food and drinks weren't great. Any other suggestions?

  1. Right downtown is the rooftop bar at the Standard. If you are looking for a bar more distant from downtown to get the long view then you might want to go have drinks up at Yamashiro above the Magic Castle in Hollywood. While it's not a "rooftop" bar it is a unique place in LA for it's look, it's location and it's view.

I love the Standard Downtown Bar, especially as the sun sets and the city lights begin to sparkle.

Call first and find out what time the $20 cover charge kicks in (7pm, from memory) and also perhaps take the train to save the valet charge.

one trick we pull occasionally is to go in to standard early and get a bracelet, then come out and walk across the street to get some gastropub quality food and some really great beers or ok cocktails at library bar. After you've had your fix and started a good buzz you can head back to the standard without waiting or paying a cover

      1. standard is awesome...the roof is about half way up the surrounding the light from the other buildings gives off this cool hue at night...the drinks are not serious but who cares with that view

          Hi peppermonkey,

How's the line to get in? Any issues / long wait? Thanks.

used to be a longer wait on the weekends, but I haven't gone on a weekend in a while. Weekdays there's not much of a wait.

        2. Also downtown, Takami has a great view space. Not a rooftop but very high up and outdoors. The food is fine, and they have happy hour appetizer deals. I've only had sake, but am sure they have a full bar.
They also have a bar/lounge only side which I've looked at for a rental but not gone to for a night out, also a nice space with outdoor area.

          1. I'm looking forward to the Hotel Shangri La opening their rooftop bar, which is imminent (all they'll say is June).

Not outdoors, but the view at Elevate (downtown) can't be beat.
