What's the best place in Vancouver to get them?

  1. I don't know about "best" - but I quite like the ones from Red Star and Golden Phoenix.

Had a delicious one today at Chongqing on Broadway. FWIW a friend who is a fiend for lo bak gao (sorry, probably mangling that) tells me they are one of the few things that are stellar at Pink Pearl but I cannot report firsthand.

    2. If you truly want to indulge, La Patisserie in Richmond makes a pretty good one that has dried scallops on it. It's close to $20 but man is it good! They use a lot of daikon or taro (depending which one you buy) so it's not a lot of fillers. I don't know if they make it year round, mine was given to me around chinese new years.

One option to make it tasty is to buy a simple one, then stir fry it with chinese sausage and mix in some XO sauce. That should work pretty good. I'm lucky that mom makes her own so I don't have to purchase it outside.

I checked the La Patisserie website, very little information but it sounds very interesting. They mention Japanese breads, which piqued my curiosity. What else would you recommend there?

They make my favourite Mango Cake there (when in season....I think it is in season now).

I hear they make a good Wife Cake (candied wintermelon pastry). I haven't had it there.

They have a pineapple pastry/cookie that's not bad but I think it's seasonal. I agree with fmed about the mango cake. I find their cakes to be so so. It's filled mostly with cream and gelatin making the cake very foamy squishy like (for their mouse style cakes). The cheese cake, nothing to rave about. I have had their hazelnut cake, it's actually not bad. The tiramisu cake, don't order it. I don't know why so many friends rave about this place, yes it's not very sweet and it's light but the taste and flavours are just not there.
