Harvard U. campus food cart still operating?

MC Slim JB May 18, 2009 01:10 PM

There was a cart once called Dudley Al Fresco that operated near Lehman Hall. Anyone know if this is still in business?

It was a summer thing last year, operated by Harvard University Dining Services just until school started again. My inside source tells me that it *should* be back again this summer. Also, Lefty's Silver Cart will be making three appearances at the Harvard University Farmers Market, in case you want something cartish on the other end of campus!

Dudley Al Fresco is planned to open June 15th and run through August 14th... operating hours are Monday - Friday from 11:30am to 2:30pm. Closed in inclement weather. There will also be a by-the-ounce salad bar inside Lehman Hall at Dudley Cafe that follows the same schedule.

Thanks for the very helpful info, folks!

I have it on good authority that the cart will be returning June 15. In addition to the grill, there will be an extensive salad bar inside Lehman Hall. As I can see the grill out my office window, I'll keep you posted if there are any changes. From June 'till August, my office smells like burgers.

The grill is open! Hot dogs, cheeseburgers ($6), the salad bar inside (45 cents and ounce), plus a daily special (no special today). It sure smells good out there. Too bad I already have a lunch obligation elsewhere.

Alas, they opened too late for inclusion in my feature on Boston street food in the new Stuff Magazine dining issue (which includes Boston Chowhound faves like Speed's). Still hope to check out Dudley Al Freso sometime, though.

Nice article Slim. I'd like to know more about the guys at Burritos N Taco (sic) to Go ... are they Mexican, Salvadorean or what?

I never did find out where the Burritos and Tacos To Go! guys are from; they could be Salvadoran, though typical markers (like pupusas on the menu) aren't there.

I've tried to be an unobtrusive customer there since they caught me copying down their menu, though usually when this happens, they figure I'm a competitor, like the time I asked the Pita Kabob owner how he seasons his kubideh -- he went from friendly to frosty very quickly. It's tough being undercover sometimes, and BATTG has no phone. If anyone gets a chance to ask them, I'd like to know myself.

Similarly, if anyone spots Madego's pastelito cart, I still want to give him a try; he used to set up in Mozart Park in JP, but I haven't successfully spotted him this year.

This is inside the yard, correct? Is it where the tables and chairs are set up adjacent to Wadsworth House?

That's the place. Enter the Yard by one of the gates near the Harvard T Station and you'll see it. Only open for lunch.

Lefty's Silver cart is due to return to the Harvard Farmers Market today and for the next three weeks according to the market newsletter. Lets hope the rain doesn't stop the return. I love the idea of buying fresh things from the farmers and creating sandwiches with them.

Here are a couple of pieces on the Harvard Farmers' Market.

A brief correction to the above post - Lefty's Silver Cart will be at the Harvard market every 3 weeks (rather than the next 3 weeks) beginning yesterday, July 7. So they'll be back July 28, August 18, etc.
