Leo's Island BBQ Hazlet NJ

Looks like this will be opening up just a few doors down from Fuji and DeVino, same strip mall behind the Dunkin Donuts. Let us know if anyone sees it open or gives it a try.

Random Side Note: Do not know if this is affliated in any way with Leo's BBQ South Plainfield NJ

    1. I noticed the sign last week as well. Island BBQ sounds intriguing, but I bet it's going to turn out to be another Portuguese BBq - whick is fine! Also while it was just mentioned, Devino closed this past weekend.

        1. Where is this place exactly? Is it on Rte 35?

This place will be opening in the same strip mall as Fuji Japanese Restaurant which is 3253 State Route 35, Hazlet, NJ. Hope this helps

              • Not open yet...looks like they are indeed moving forward.

                  1. This place has opened. It is a Filipino - Hawaiian Restaurant. All items are made to order, the kabobs took about 20 minutes to be ready.

Tried Two Kabobs which were enjoyable. Chicken and Pork. The Pork was marinaded and the chicken was a huli huli sauce. Each Kabob costs 2.00. A platter with rice, salad and pineapple macaroni salad is 6.50. The menu is not online yet.

Would not say these Filipino Kabobs would make the top of the Anthony Bourdain hierarchy of pork but would definitely return to check out more items, everything was good.

The people at both Leo's and Tropical Hut are SO nice and helpful, they took time and explained everything.

Has been there for 10 years - check out the catering menu - they have a small restaurant in the back of the store with three tables. They serve up authentic filipino food. It is like the Kam Man prepared food section, pre made hot dishes, they have 8-10 items, lumpia Shanghai, desserts and so much more. A favorite dessert Ginataan Bilo Bilo - YUMMY!

If you are brave they have a basket of Balut.
Yes as seen on fear factor, a filipino delicacy.

They also operate Leo's BBQ in South Plainfield, and a location down in south jersey.

                        • This seems to be in the process of closing. According to the sign on the door, it is currently serving only empanadas and "special lechon" (which I gather is roast suckling pig and presumably done only as a special order), and these only until their lease is up.

Leo's Island BBQ has been in "closing mode" for months, after several renovations, a dedicated lunch following, a wonderful take out menu and fantastic value...sounds like a landlord issue to me. Big bummer!

Update: the once sensational Leo's Island BBQ/Hazlet is now operating as a bakery with a big sign advertising homemade custard cups. I plan to check it out this week.

                                    1. re: HillJ

This new bakery is called Island Baked Goods and their portuguese custard cups are provided by another baker under the name Pinho's Custard Cups. I purchased two custard cups and two chicken empanada philippine style. $6.00 for all. They also sell two styles of cheese rolls, creamy custard desserts and spicy nuts. Prices are incredibly low. The custard cups are lovely and the empanada's will have to wait until dinner time.

                                        1. re: HillJ

Well, unlike the creamy freshly made custard cups, the chicken empanada was off. Unexpectedly sweet pastry with a savory-ish chicken filling that unfortunately lacked spice or enjoyable flavor. Disappointing.
