Territory BBQ ~ Silverlake ~ Short Review + Photos

We went to Territory BBQ and Records in Silverlake/Los Angeles this past Saturday.
We tried the beef brisket, ribs, fried chicken, collard greens, cole slaw, mac and cheese, potato salad, beans, and biscuits. Everything tasted very good, but our favorites were the fried chicken, and the brisket.

The staff is very attentive and friendly. There's nothing fancy at this restaurant, but it is very comfortable, kind of like eating at your friend's backyard bbq. In my opinion it serves tasty home style bbq with a down to earth feeling all around.

We will go back!

I don't think so, but I think you can bring your own. You might want to call first.

biscuits were not so hot in my opinion and the mac-n-cheese was flavorless. the meats were good, the chicken great and the beans and coleslaw were also good.

i dont know what happened to the other post about territory. but i'll sum up what my last post said.

this place is the biggest bummer for me. the food was super bad (beans being an exception actually) and the place just really seems hastily thrown together. the mac and cheese was atrocious!

im no hater. in fact i love the owners band, bad wizard. and the label tee pee records has some of my favorite bands. i was really really rooting for this place. im gonna go again in a few weeks in hopes they get things together

I went on Sunday and, yeah, the dudes were super nice, but my GF's brisket was downright awful. My pulled pork was good, but pretty much everything else was sub-par. Cole Slaw done in a food processor? Tasteless Mac n Cheese? Not feeling it. I'll give em a few more tries, the price is right and its nearby...and I think the concept is great, but I'm worried these guys may not have the chops to pull it off.

                  1. re: Shames

yeah my brisket was 50percent fat. and i wasnt stoked w 2 tiny slices for $11bucks. it soooo close to my house, i just want it to be good!

i dont know how its possible to screw up mac and cheese that badly!

                  2. re: GrillEmAll

I went there around 6pm on Friday and they were out of everything except for Catfish and Chicken. I thought that was very odd to be out of half the menu on a Friday right before dinner. They said "they had a party last night and ran out of food". That was even more bizarre.

I hope they get it together. I was waiting to hear some comments before I tried it again. They really didn't do much to earn points in my book.

Can't comment on the food since they were out of most items. Maybe the Chicken or Catfish are good, but if I go to a place that specializes in N. Carolina BBQ, I'm getting Pulled Pork. I love Music and I love BBQ. Maybe the combo is just too "high concept" to do well. The prices aren't bad, but I heard the portions were a bit small. Maybe because they were running out of food?

For good BBQ in the area, go to the Atwater Farmers Market on Sunday -- there's a BBQ stand there that's much discussed on the board. I pick up food for dinner and reheat it later on. They have pulled pork, tri-tip, ribs, beans -- it's all good.

                    2. re: GrillEmAll

I agree, they've got a great location, a good concept (the records), they just need to improve on the food. alot.

                2. Wow, in a bad way.
First the good stuff, cool ambiance in that not trying hard ambiance kinda way. Love the only outdoor seating, the fact they have pickled eggs and green beans and good tunes as well as a record store. It's a great concept, casual but cool. Oh, and the fried chicken was really really good, not greasy, just crispy, peppery tasty fried chicken, dark meat only. The free frozen pops aren't too shabby either.

Now the bad stuff; everything else. The two pouty girls working the counter looked like a couple of uptown hipsters slumming it as counter girls at the new hipster BBQ place. I mean a little friendliness would perk up the place alot. The owner was friendly and funny and that was a bonus. We ordered the Pulled pork plate, the brisket plate and the fried chicken plate. The pulled pork wasn't pulled, it was chopped which would be OK for a sandwhich but not for a plate and for $11 the portion was at about 4 maybe 5 oz. also the pork was incredibly bland. no smokey flavor that you crave when having BBQ. The Brisket was smokey but once again chopped into little mushy bits. The sides were also disappointing especially the sorry excuse for cole slaw that they serve. The only exceptions were the pickled green beans which were great.

This place has potential but won't go anywhere with out some more direction in the food department.

When we went to Territory BBQ, I think it was the first weekend that they were open, there were no pouty girl attendants, and I was glad for that, since I know exactly what you mean. The only attendants and cooks that day were 'the boys.' They were quite friendly and attentive, without any greediness. We didn't try the pulled pork, everything we ordered was ok, but definitively our favorite was the fried chicken.
