Consumer-friendly restaurant supply store in DC metro area?

jmwally May 18, 2009 09:33 AM

I'm looking for a consumer-friendly restaurant supply store in the DC metro area, ideally in DC or NoVa but am willing to travel to Baltimore if the store is really good. I used to live in Los Angeles, where I loved going to Surfas (http://www.surfasonline.com/) even if to just look around. I'm not looking for machinery, just home cooking and baking (and serving) needs. Thank you!

There is a restaurant supply place in the Laurel area called Sysco - on Rt.1. I haven't been there in a couple years but it used to be pretty good with decent prices.

The Sysco in Jessup is nice because it is easy to access, and you don't need to be a business owner, but the selection is extremely limited.

Did you ever find a place like Surfas? I am looking for something in the same area that has the same atmosphere/quality/variety. Please share if you did.

Try National Restaurant Supply along Rt. 1, going north, just before you come to Laurel, MD. They are wholesalers but will sell to normal foodies too. As you are coming north, you will pass Costco, and then Cherry Lane, and watch out for their sign on the left as you pass the shopping center at the intersection on Rt. 1 and Cherry Lane. Lots of stuff, not much help finding it, but the hunt is part of the fun.
