canberra help (near ANU)

I've been here for a week (with a break over the weekend in Melbourne); now am facing another. I don't have a car, so downtown only;. Been to Asian Cafe, didn't do it for me (laksa seemed greasy); a Chinese noodle place on Alinga was better (something "North") but a little to spartan, yet to be broken in. Suggestions?

Looking for something walkable from ANU. I wanted to be diplomatic about it, but the pickings look pretty slim. Anything in Canberra Center that's good, reasonably priced food? Doesn't matter what genre - pub food would be fine. I haven't been able to find anything already up on the boards.

The centre of Canberra is generally dire. People head out to hub satellite suburbs like Dickson. I thought you might be up for a short walk for something edible.

Okay, I found a pretty good authentic sichuan chinese place: Spicy Ginger Cafe. Just off campus. I had the "couple's sweet meat" -- room temperature tongue and tripe in a spicy oil -- and hot-peppered pork - chinese fresh bacon stir fried with black beans, cabbage, and bell peppers. Both excellent. The owner was hospitable and helpful. the place is only three months old, so may not be known to locals. Website with location here: spicygingercafe.com

This find proves two rules of thumb: 1) keep wandering around and you're bound to find something, even in less promising locales, and 2) the place that has more diners who fit the ethnic orientation of the food will, on average, be better than the places that don't.

Sorry for another reply to my own post, but for the benefit of anyone in my situation in the future (myself included), I had a perfectly acceptable pork ramen at another new place, Tasuke, 122 Alinga, also appearing to cater to asian students at ANU. Tomorrow, home.
