Sydney - cheap dumpling places?
Anyone know of any cheapish dumpling places in the Sydney CBD? The ones that have great cheap dumplings but sticky old menus in plastic sleeves?
I'm angling for something like Camy Shanghai in Melbourne, but I don't think there is one, so something along those lines would be great.
Cheap is relative, but IMO most dumpling places are not expensive. Have you tried "Din Tai Feng" in World Square?

I was thinking more of something that would be a filling lunch for around/under $10.
I heard that Din Tai Feng was a bit exy and fairly small servings?
For example, the restaurant I mentioned has 20 dumplings for $6.50. Sooo good.

There's nothing as cheap as Camy in central Sydney - I think it reflects the rent. Across all Asian meals unfortunately. Best bets are the noddle and dumpling places at the end of George and Sussex Streets, or the food courts at World Trade Centre on Sussex or at Paddys Market.

Try the general Chinatown area. On Sussex St there's Yee King, they do pan fried and steamed dumplings. On the corner of Dixon St and Goulburn St, there's a place that specialises in dumplings -- I think it's called Da Niang Dumpling -- but not personally my favourite. You could try Dixon St Food Court as well, though they tend to do more one plate meal sorta thing. Similarly you could try your luck at the food court at the top level of the little shopping centre opposite Yee King.
A short train ride away is Ashfield in the Inner West ... Being "Little Shanghai", it's dumpling central, all relatively cheap ($7 - 9 mark for a plate or bamboo steamer's worth). If you're serious about your dumplings I would make a journey there ... Shanghai Night or Taste of Shanghai (opposite) are generally regarded as the best places ... especially for xiao long bau.

Say Bay Dumplings in Pitt St - outstanding and very cheap. Also worth venturing to Chinatown for the dumplings at Chinese Noodle Restaurant in Quay Sy - it's the closest we have to Camy, and Yee King in Sussex St is very good as well.

Hi Lolly.
I have lived in Chinatown, at Paddy's Market, for the last 2 years and eaten absolutely everywhere.
It is tough to find excellent dumplings for cheap. I know the style you mean, cheap and tasty. As mentioned, Din Tai Fung is the totally best bet for quality, but cheap they ain't!
However, you do have options. Say Bay Dumplings on Pitt is passable.
But if you go to "Prince Center" - not the "Quay St." side (where the awesome western-chinese style"Chinese Noodle House is), but the "Thomas St." side, and look for "Cho Dumpling House" you will be rewarded with excellent Taiwanese style dumplings (and oher delights) for cheap.
You'll just have to stand in line behind the droves of Chinese students eating there.

Cho gets my vote too. Although only one style of dumpling and they do run out from time to time. Next door is favoured by many sydneysiders but I can't remember the name.

Try Shanghai Tang in the Breakfre hotel on George St, about where Campbell St meets George St. I like their xiao long bao, I like the egg yolk/sweet rice dumpling, good shallot pancake.
